Salary Range for each position level

General Transportation Tech I A16, $37,918- $58,130

General Transportation Tech II A17, $39,976- $61,399

General Transportation Tech III A18, $42,521- $67,671

Position Description

General Transportation Tech I:

Performs routine transportation operations or maintenance support work, such as: construction, maintenance, and/or material and process inspection. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.

General Transportation Tech II:

Performs moderately complex transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: maintenance contract and/or material and process inspections; roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment, traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

General Transportation Tech III:

Performs highly complex transportation operations or maintenance support work, such as: construction, contract maintenance, and/or material and process inspections; traffic control; and training other employees. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Essential Duties

General Transportation Tech I:

• Inspects barricades to ensure compliance with barricade standards.

• Inspects construction, contract maintenance methods, and workmanship to ensure contractors build and maintain roadways, bridges, traffic signals and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specifications.

• Maintains construction project records and processes related paperwork.

• Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

General Transportation Tech II:

• Assists in inspecting traffic control devices and their placement at construction project sites for compliance with specifications for devices; safety laws, rules, regulations and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.

• Inspects construction and routine and non-routine contract maintenance methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build and maintain roadways, bridges, traffic signals and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specifications.

• Maintains construction project records and/or bridge inspection records; processes related paperwork.

• Serves as the only inspector on a small project.

• Conducts tests of highway construction materials, makes calculation and records results.

• Inspects barricades to ensure compliance with barricade standards.

• Inspects materials to ensure construction materials meet Department specifications.

• Reviews plans, stores and maintains plans, specifications, and estimate (PS&E) documents and files.

• Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

General Transportation Tech III:

• Inspects traffic control devices and their placement at construction project sites for compliance with specifications for devices; safety laws, rules, regulations and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.

• Serves as the only inspector on a small project.

Minimum Qualifications:

General Transportation Tech I:

Experience: None

General Transportation Tech II:

Experience: 1 year transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent). Related technical training or education from an accredited institution may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis . Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

General Transportation Tech III:

Experience: 2 years transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, or related work experience. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent). Related technical training or education from an accredited institution may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Licenses and Certifications:

General Transportation Tech I, II or III:

  • Valid US driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

General Transportation Tech I, II or III:

• Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.

• Subject to hazards-moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals.

• Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device.

• Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.
