Position Description

In this position your will be responsible for seal coat plans and preparation, seal coat inspections, bridge inspections and monitoring reports, and emergency operations. Performs routine transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.

Essential Duties:

The essential duties for the General Transportation Tech I, II and III include:

  • Inspects barricades to ensure compliance with barricade standards.
  • Performs preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing and minor repairs on equipment and completes various required reports including timekeeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms, and PMI.
  • Helps the public and performs other work as directed during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents, and hazardous material spills.
  • Assists with inspecting maintenance contract construction methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build and maintain roadways, bridges, traffic signals and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specifications.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned


Additional duties for General Transportation Tech II and III include:

  • Serves as the only maintenance contract inspector on a small project.
  • Assists in inspecting traffic control devices and their placement at construction project sites for compliance with specifications for devices; safety laws, rules, regulations and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
  • Maintains construction project records and/or bridge inspection records; processes related paperwork; reviews files for compliance with the bridge inspection Manual of Procedures.
  • Inspects routine maintenance contract construction methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build and maintain roadways, bridges, traffic signals and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specifications.
  • Inspects materials, equipment, and production procedures in a manufacturing plant or at point of supply to ensure construction materials meet Department specifications.


Additional duties for General Transportation Tech III include:

  • Inspects routine and non-routine maintenance contract construction methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build and maintain roadways, bridges, traffic signals and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specifications.


Minimum Qualifications:

Education: No education required.

Experience: GTT I = No experience required; GTT II = 1 year experience*; GTT III = 2 years experience*

*Experience must be in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated part-time equivalent). Related technical training or education from an accredited institution may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications .

Licenses and Certifications:

      • Valid driver's license at the time of application. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
      • Safety Impact Certificate

      • Methods, procedures, equipment, and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance work
      • Applicable inspection methods, procedures and techniques
      • Materials used in highway/bridge construction and maintenance
      • The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices
      • Maintenance concepts, methods, policies, and requirements
      • Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines and specification codes


Some Skill in:

      • Using computers and applicable programs, applications, and systems
      • Using applicable hand and power tools, equipment, and mechanical devices of the trade
      • Maintaining a safe working relationship


Ability to:

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Required to wear protective gear, including, respirator, hard hat, steal toed boots, and other equipment or devices
  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour
  • Subject to noise and vibration
  • Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs. at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.
  • Balancing-walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling
  • Hearing-perceive sound at normal speaking levels; receive information by oral communication
