TxDOT's Fort Worth District is looking for a General Transportation Tech I or II in our Mineral Wells Maintenance Office. All the training, tools, and uniforms will be provided. General Transportation Tech I / A16: $40,918 - $61,130

General Transportation Tech II / A17: $42,976 - $64,469

Position Description

General Transportation Tech I:

Performs routine transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.

Essential Duties for General Transportation Tech I:

  • Operates complex heavy equipment such as a motor grader, large excavator, heavy bulldozer, crane, herbicide truck, heavy asphalt paving machine, self-propelled asphalt distributor, and profiling/milling machine.
  • Operates heavy equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a half cubic yards or more, tractor-trailer haul truck, large dragline, shovel, paint striper, and dump truck.
  • Operates light equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a quarter cubic yards or less, pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper, and mower.
  • Performs preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing and minor repairs.
  • Sands or cleans bridges and roads, posts warning signs, helps the public and performs other work as directed during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents, and hazardous material spills.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.


General Transportation Tech II:

Performs moderately complex transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: maintenance contract and material and process inspections; roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment, traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Additional Essential Duties for General Transportation Tech II:

  • Assists in inspecting traffic control devices and their placement at construction project sites for compliance with specifications for devices; safety laws, rules, regulations and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
  • Maintains highways and rights-of-way; performs highly skilled roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites.
  • Identifies, repairs, and installs signs, delineators, mail box supports and posts; performs welding; and uses/moves equipment/tools, materials and products.
  • Assists with traffic control; places and gathers cones, warning signs and barricades; flags traffic.
  • Maintains picnic and rest areas, rights-of-way, maintenance yards and comfort stations.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.


General Transportation Tech I or II:

Minimum Qualifications:

General Transportation Tech I:

No experience or education required.

General Transportation Tech II:

1 YEAR transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience. (Experience can be satisfied by full-time or prorated part-time equivalent.)

Licenses and Certifications for General Transportation Tech I - II:

  • Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Mandatory: Must have a Commercial Class "A" Driver's License or have obtained a CDL "A" License, within 120 calendar days from date of employment.
  • Mandatory: Safety Impact Certificate

General Transportation Tech I:

  • Methods, procedures, equipment and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance work
  • The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices
  • Maintenance concepts, methods, policies and requirements

  • Using basic mathematical fundamentals

  • Materials used in highway/bridge construction and maintenance
  • Basic vehicle mechanics, maintenance and repair procedures
  • Surveying/mapping methods, materials and publication procedures
  • Performing calculations to include material and labor estimates, expenses, technical survey data and engineering calculations

  • Must be able to report for duty within 60 minutes of notification on a 24-hour basis to respond to emergency situations.

  • Required to work hours other than 8 to 5.
  • Required to work under exposure to inclement weather conditions.
  • Required to wear personal protective equipment provided by employer and comply with all safety requirements.
