Position Summary:
The Laboratory Technician is responsible for completing laboratory analyses as part of a grant-funded research project to assess sources and sinks of marine debris throughout multiple ecosystems in southwest Puerto Rico.

The ideal candidate will be responsible for the remaining laboratory analyses of this study, and will generally be responsible for data analyses, graphical interpretation, and presentation of data.

Specifically, responsibilities will include:
(1) processing samples using Fournier Transform Infrared ( FTIR ) Spectroscopy and spectral interpretation
(2) compiling data from multiple beach clean-ups, often recorded in Spanish
(3) coordinating remotely with collaborators in Puerto Rico, primarily in conversational Spanish
(4) assisting undergraduate students with their lab work.

This is a full-time 5-month position that is available August 1, 2024 based at Villanova University, located in a suburb outside of Philadelphia, PA.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • 75% - Sample processing and data interpretation
  • 10% - Compiling data from beach clean-ups
  • 5% - Coordinating with Puerto Rican collaborators
  • 5% - Assisting undergraduate students with their own lab work
Minimum Qualifications:
Formal Education
  • Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science or Oceanography or related discipline
Work Experience
  • Prior experience working in a research laboratory
Work Skills (e.g., written and verbal communication skills)
  • Experience with scientific writing and presentation skills.
  • Experience displaying scientific data graphically.
  • Conversational and technical proficiency in Spanish is important for this position.
Specific Job Knowledge (e.g., knowledge of principles and procedures related to field and area)
  • Prior experience with (1) laboratory skills and knowledge of lab safety protocols; (2) FTIR analyses and interpretation and/or marine debris analyses; and (3) interacting with a diverse group of collaborators.
Equipment Knowledge
  • Use of basic laboratory equipment is required.
  • Experience conducting Fournier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy.
Preferred Qualifications:
Formal Education
  • Master of Science in Environmental Science or Oceanography or related discipline
Specific Job Knowledge (e.g., knowledge of principles and procedures related to field and area)
  • Experience using Cary 630 FTIR Model instrument.

Physical Requirements and/or Unusual Work Hours:
Physical requirements: (items such as lifting, pushing, pulling, standing or sitting for extended periods of time, manual dexterity, walking etc.) General laboratory skills, including pipetting, weighing, preparing samples for analyses that require attention to detail and appropriate manual dexterity and care.
