The GI (Gastrointestinal) Technical Specialist at MUSC plays a vital role in providing technical support and assistance in the Gastroenterology (GI) department. This position combines clinical expertise, procedural assistance, and equipment management to ensure the smooth operation of GI procedures and the delivery of high-quality patient care.
Key Responsibilities:
Procedural Assistance: Provide technical support and assistance during GI procedures, including but not limited to endoscopies, colonoscopies, and other diagnostic and therapeutic interventions. Assist healthcare providers in positioning patients, preparing equipment, and monitoring patient vital signs during procedures.
Equipment Management: Ensure the availability, functionality, and cleanliness of GI equipment and instrumentation. Perform routine maintenance checks, troubleshoot equipment issues, and coordinate repairs or replacements as needed to maintain optimal performance and safety standards.
Patient Care Coordination: Collaborate with healthcare providers, nurses, and other members of the multidisciplinary team to coordinate patient care before, during, and after GI procedures. Assist in patient preparation, monitoring, and recovery, ensuring patient comfort, safety, and confidentiality at all times.
Documentation and Record-keeping: Accurately document procedural details, patient information, and equipment usage in electronic medical records (EMR) systems or other designated documentation platforms. Maintain thorough and organized records of procedures, equipment maintenance, and inventory levels to support quality assurance and compliance efforts.
Quality Assurance and Compliance: Adhere to established protocols, policies, and procedures related to GI procedures, infection control, patient safety, and regulatory compliance. Participate in quality improvement initiatives, infection control audits, and regulatory inspections to ensure adherence to standards of care and best practices.
Education and Training: Stay informed about advancements in GI technology, procedures, and equipment through ongoing education and professional development activities. Provide training and mentorship to new staff members, residents, and fellows on GI procedures, equipment usage, and safety protocols.

- High school diploma or equivalent required; additional education or certification in healthcare-related field preferred.
- Minimum of 3-5 years of experience as a GI Technician, Endoscopy Technician, or equivalent role in a hospital or ambulatory care setting.
- Proficiency in assisting with a variety of GI procedures, including endoscopies, colonoscopies, and biopsy procedures.
- Strong technical skills, including the ability to operate and troubleshoot GI equipment and instrumentation.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively with patients, families, and healthcare team members.
- Commitment to patient-centered care, safety, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Basic life support (BLS) certification required; advanced cardiac life support (ACLS) and gastroenterology-specific certifications may be required or preferred.
