General Description:

Description The Texas General Land Office primarily serves the schoolchildren, veterans, and the environment of Texas. The agency does so by preserving our history, maximizing state revenue through innovative administration, and through the prudent stewardship of state lands and natural resources. This position is with our Office of General Counsel department.

Work involves performing complex (journey-level) legal assistant work. Work involves researching, analyzing, investigating, and drafting legal documents and assisting attorneys with case management. Works under general supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

Essential Job Duties:

-Maintains all electronic litigation cases in document management database (Sharepoint)

-Gather documents and prepares discovery request and production within eDiscovery database for litigation- both administrative and matters in district court.

-Drafts and prepares OAG referral letters. Files notices with Texas Registry.

-Schedules and coordinates GLO personnel and co-counsel for meetings, interviews and depositions.

-Prepares and coordinates closed case files with archives.

-Assists in coordinating, assembling, and preparing evidence, exhibits, affidavits, and documents for use in legal proceedings.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of legal terminology; of state and federal laws, rules, and regulations; of research methods and techniques; of administrative and court procedures; of the legislative process; and of public notice requirements.

Skill in understanding and processing information, in the use of office equipment, and in the use of a computer and applicable software.

Ability to conduct research; to draft, prepare, and interpret legal documents; to evaluate and relate findings to cases in question; to conduct investigations; and to communicate effectively.

Physical Requirements:

This position requires the employee to primarily perform sedentary office work; however, mobility (moving around the work-site) is routinely required to carry out some duties. This position requires extensive computer, telephone and client/customer contact and communication. It requires the ability to move and position oneself as needed for filing and similar routine office duties. The job also requires normal cognitive abilities requiring the ability to learn, recall, and apply certain practices and policies. It requires the stamina to maintain attention to detail despite interruptions. Ability to read printed materials and computer screens. The individual must be able to move and transport records, documents, boxes, and all related information and materials, weighing up to 20 pounds when required. The individual must be able to remain stationary for long periods of time when commuting to and from assigned destination and when traveling on state business including fieldwork and training assignments.



Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in law or a related field plus one (1) year of legal assistance work.

Preferred Qualifications:

Legal assistance work in State Government or entity.
