Job Summary:
The Peninsular Agricultural Research Station (PARS) is one of UW-Madison's 12 Research Stations. The Station consists of approximately 120 acres with slightly more than half of those tillable. We currently support research for UW Madison and UW Extension that focuses on tree fruit including tart cherries, apples, grapes, perennial and annual grains, and cover crops. The Station also houses the USDA Potato Genebank. This position is responsible for maintaining and landscaping lawns, planting beds, and fields as well as assisting with horticultural management in various research and production plantings. Primarily, this will involve mowing various greenspaces, maintaining landscaping around buildings, and assisting with irrigation and harvest management in apple, cherry, grape, and hazelnut plantings.

Responsibilities: Maintains and landscapes lawns, planting beds, fields, and golf course groups. Inspects grounds and courses to ensure conditions meet institutional grounds keeping standards.
  • 50% Installs, propagates, and maintains the health of new and existing plants and landscape using a variety of vehicles and equipment
  • 5% Constructs lawn and landscaping projects including soil grading, seeding, and sodding
  • 15% Identifies and acts to remedy plant diseases and insect damage
  • 5% Implements and monitors chemical and fertilizer programs
  • 5% Maintains clean and clear lawns, walkways, roadways, and parking lots to ensure they are free of debris, litter, snow, and ice
  • 5% Plants, cultivates, and harvests vegetables, fruits, nuts, horticultural specialties, and field crops
  • 5% Cleans, grades, sorts, packs, and loads harvested products and seed
  • 10% May participate in irrigation activities

Qualifications:
Required:
- Must have at a least 1 year experience with a range of horticultural plants
- Experience managing woody and herbaceous plants in landscape and production settings
- Prior experience operating riding lawnmowers, small equipment and landscaping power tools like weed eaters and hedgers

Preferred:
- Experience with commercial production of apples, cherries, and grapes
- Experience with operation and maintenance of landscape equipment such as bed edgers, chainsaws, and commercial mowers.
- Experience in an agricultural research setting
Work Schedule:
Normal hours are 7:30am - 4:00pm Monday through Friday, flexibility depending on weather. Occasional nights and weekends may be required for this position.
Work Type:
It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.
Appointment Type, Duration:
Terminal appointment.
This position has the possibility to be extended based on need and/or funding.
Salary:
Minimum $15.87 HOURLY

Actual pay will depend on experience and qualifications.
Additional Information:
-A criminal background check will be required.
-Work conditions include lifting up to 50 pounds, climbing ladders, standing for extended periods of time and working outdoors for extended periods of time.
