Overview:

We are seeking a Group Leader for the HFIR Maintenance group in the Research Reactors Division (RRD) of the Neutron Sciences Directorate . Our directorate operates two neutron facilities on behalf of the U.S. Department of Energy: The High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS). RRD operates HFIR with the mission to deliver safe, reliable, and efficient reactor operation to support the neutron science mission. HFIR's 15 world-class neutron scattering instruments (planned or in operation) are used fundamental and applied research on the structure and dynamics of matter!

In this role, you will lead maintenance activities at HFIR, focusing on improving safety and efficiency. Responsibilities include identifying and implementing improvements in personnel, processes, and equipment. The MI Group Leader also monitors field work to ensure expectations are met.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Manage HFIR Craft Supervisors and craft personnel, providing leadership and support to ensure world-class performance in maintenance field work and efficient administrative activities (training, timekeeping, absence control, performance evaluation, etc.).
  • Enthusiastically pursue improvements in the management of field work activities, collaborating with personnel and organizations internal and external to ORNL, identifying improvements in personnel, plant, and processes that will yield continuous improvement in the safety, reliability, and efficiency of HFIR.
  • Leads or serves as a primary contributor to coordinating, planning, scheduling, work package reviews, and assessments in accordance with the HFIR Maintenance Program as required for accomplishment of maintenance processes.
  • Leads field work activities when needed, maintains qualifications as a Craft Supervisor, and fills role of relief Craft Supervisor if existing relief staffing level is not adequate.
  • Establishes and maintains a strong nuclear safety culture that serves to make nuclear safety the overriding priority. In doing this, goals of personnel safety, plant reliability, and efficiency will also be realized.
  • Meets the training and qualification requirements for maintenance personnel defined in DOE Order 5480.20A (Personnel Selection, Qualification, and Training Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities) and ensures these training requirements are maintained for the exempt personnel and craft in the organization.
  • Applies and provides guidance for Integrated Safety Management through the HFIR work control process, including participating in pre-job planning, conducting pre-job safety reviews, implementing personnel safety programs, and providing/facilitating post-job feedback.
  • Supervises the craft resources assigned to support HFIR work, including participation in the plan-of-the day process and the development of estimates and schedules.
  • Interacts with maintenance, engineering, nuclear safety, ESH&Q, and support staff in the development of HFIR work packages, performs required work package reviews, and develops work plans as required.
  • Ensures the availability of materials, tools, and supplies to support tasks, management of critical tools (such as M&TE, mobile equipment, etc.), and inventories (including hazardous materials).

Basic Qualifications:
  • A BS degree in a technical related field with at least 8 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience (AS +10 years or high school diploma +12 years).
  • Proven experience leading maintenance projects or teams in a nuclear environment.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience working in buildings identifying Energy Conservation Measures.
  • Proficiency in continuous improvement tools and methods such as Lean and Six Sigma. Certifications are desirable.
  • Previous energy management, sustainability, facilities management, and/or operations experience.
  • General knowledge and field experience with facility systems, including HVAC, electrical, and mechanical.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to present ideas, findings, and recommendations in a logical, concise manner.


Special Requirements:
  • Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
