Newport News Behavioral Health Center is a residential program, for males and females ages 11-18, consists of a cognitive behavioral treatment model that encourages youth to safely explore thoughts and feelings related to the development of positive and desirable behavior within their homes and communities. Our programs have been designed to provide each individual resident quality mental health treatment in a safe, therapeutic environment.
It is the mission of Newport News Behavioral Health Center to promote recovery from the effects of abuse, addiction and other behavioral issues through specialized treatment interventions provided by a community of caring professionals.

Newport News Behavioral Health Center (NNBHC) has an excellent career opportunity for an experienced Special Education Adaptive Physical Education Teacher to join our team of dedicated professionals.
The successful candidate will be someone who successfully:
- Administers flexible fitness instruction inclusive of health curriculum for residents that is consistent with Virginia Standards of Learning (SOLs).
- Reviews records and information received from each student's home school in order to develop the educational program in collaboration with the Education Director or designee.
- Provides timely documentation of individualized, monthly academic and behavioral progress and produces reports for treatment team meetings, participating in meetings as a stakeholder in promoting successful outcomes for all residents.
- Participates in the development and implementation of an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) for students who are eligible for Special Education services, as required by the Local Education Agency (LEA) or NNBHC, creates an Individual Program Plan (IPP) for appropriate residents in coordination with colleagues, and implements 504 Plans or ESY Plans, accommodations and services, as appropriate.
- Collaborates with contracted providers to develop and implement goals, services, and accommodations for residents with related services (e.g. Speech/Language, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, etc.).
- Submits lesson plans to lead teacher or Education Director on an established schedule. Conceives, constructs, and produces planned, classroom activities at least one week in advance.
- Utilizes sound pedagogical and behavioral strategies for working with students who may demonstrate significant emotional and behavioral disorders.
- Evaluates student work, completes interims and report cards according to school calendar timelines, and distributes to the appropriate parties.
- Participates in professional development for the facility and/or Education Department that ensures compliance with contractual agreements, hospital, and state regulatory requirements, Joint Commission, and Virginia Association of Individualized Special Education Facilities (VAISEF) standards.
Teaching at NNBHC requires the following:
- Must hold a valid Virginia Teaching License.
- Must be willing and able to teach and tutor functional, academic reading and math, regardless of licensure and potentially outside of school hours as requested.
- Must have a good, working knowledge Special Education regulations and behavior management techniques, flexibility, and a willingness to grow professionally.
- Previous classroom experience teaching students in a mental health or alternative school setting is potentially advantageous but by no means required.
- Dynamic vision and ability to adapt, self-determine, or respond to student needs or create pathways for students to succeed academically despite behavioral difficulties.
