Health Sensing HW - Optical Module Design Engineer
Cupertino, California
Summary
The Health Sensing Hardware team is looking for a highly-motivated optical engineer to work on the next-generation of optical health sensors.
We are seeking a candidate that will be able to demonstrate training in optical system design, modeling and fabrication to develop the optical health sensors in the Apple Watch. This candidate should also be adept at analyzing user data to infer real-world performance trends and emergent behavior. Lastly, the candidate must be able to distill simulation and empirical results into concise design assessments to multi-functional collaborators and senior management.
Key Qualifications
HW engineer with shown expertise in design of optical assemblies and platforms comprising of electro-optical and mechanical components.
Experience planning, implementing and analyzing data from user studies.
Skilled in use of ray-tracing and/or optical design softwares e.g. LightTools, OptisWorks, FRED, Zemax etc.
Proficient in programming languages, MATLAB, Python, C etc.
Experience with optical system design for high-volume mass production, including defining requirements, setting specifications and handling vendor development.
Knowledge of light transport in biological tissue.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, excellent documentation skills.
Experience developing test platforms and HW-controls software using Python, LabView etc is a plus.
Flexible, collaborative and willing to work in multi-functional fast-paced technology development.
Description
We work as a team of research scientists and hardware engineers developing technologies for the optical health sensors. You will be responsible for the optical sensor simulations and prototype-based assessments, user studies and analysis of sensor performance. The role also requires strong data analysis skills to infer trends and dependencies in the data to improve the understanding of tissue-sensor interactions and directly impact the design and performance of the health sensors. This is a highly multi-functional role and will require close collaboration with mechanical, electrical and software engineers. Lastly, you will be responsible for delivering detailed assessments and designs evaluations to leadership and partners.
- Extensive experience with optical design and modeling is required.
- Experience with high volume mass production is required.
- Fundamental understanding of electro-optical systems and assembly is preferred.
- Knowledge of tissue-optics is a plus.
- Prior experience with developing analysis tools for automating data processing.
- Basic knowledge of EE principles is a plus.
