The Fairfax County Department of Public Work and Environmental Services (DPWES) Stormwater Maintenance Operations seeks several skilled Heavy Equipment Operators to operate heavy equipment relating to stormwater maintenance and construction operations. Operates heavy equipment used in various maintenance and construction activities including tractors, cranes, tandem dump trucks, loaders, motor graders, rubber tire loaders, backhoes, track loaders, excavators, skid steers, and low-boy tractor and trailer used in the construction and maintenance of roads, sidewalks, storm drainage and other public improvements. Performs daily equipment inspection and completes an operational check list. Acts as crew leader when designated and engages in manual labor as required. Ensures all appropriate safety procedures are followed when working near heavy, medium, or small equipment. Ability to obtain and maintain a Responsible Land Disturber Certificate (RLD).

Note: The appointee to this position will be required to be available twenty-four hours a day/seven days a week (24/7) to respond to snow, flooding, and other designated emergencies on an as needed basis.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to completion of the tenth grade, and three years of experience operating motorized equipment and/or semi-tractor trailers, as appropriate.
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background, driving record check, and pre-employment physical to the satisfaction of the employer.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Ability to pass pre-employment physicals. With or without reasonable accommodation performs duties to include pushing, pulling, lifting, bending, stooping, walking, climbing in and out of catch basins and manholes. Candidate must be physically and mentally capable of performing confined space entry operations via 21" manholes with vertical descent using integral or portable ladders requiring use of all applicable protective equipment and documentation. Hard hat, eye protection, hearing protection, safety footwear, long pants, sleeved shirt and personal fall arrest harness. replacement of manhole covers weighing up to 90 lbs. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
SELECTION PROCEDURE:
Panel interview and may include exercise.
BONUS ELIGIBILITY:
Positions within this classification that require a CDL that are general merit may be eligible for a one-time hiring incentive bonus for new county employees only. This bonus program requires a signed payback agreement between the department and employee. Must have CDL at time of hire.

- A $2,500 signing bonus is available to new county employees hired in the Heavy Equipment Operator position. Applicants must possess a valid CDL at time of application submission to be eligible.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to completion of the tenth grade, and three years of experience operating motorized equipment and/or semi-tractor trailers, as appropriate.
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
- Valid driver's license.
- Commercial driver's license (CDL) Class "A".
- Tanker Endorsement within 12 months of hire.
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background, driving record check, and pre-employment physical to the satisfaction of the employer.

- Ability to read and interpret engineering plans for utility locations prior to excavation.
- Experience leading crews and maintenance and construction projects.
- Two years or more a crew lead or foreman.
- Two years of experience plowing snow.
- Two years of experience operating equipment such as: low boy tractor and trailer, excavator, backhoe, skid steer, rubber tire loader.
