KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The State University of New York at Fredonia invites applications for a contingent permanent, full-time, 12-month, Highway Equipment Operator (SG7) in Facilities Services - Grounds & Landscaping.

This hiring rate for this position is $37,121 and includes a comprehensive benefits package. The work schedule

will be Tuesday - Saturday, 7am-3:30pm and may require evening and weekend work.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Reporting to the Head Grounds Supervisor, the successful candidate will perform a variety of routine manual tasks in maintaining the appearance and condition of grounds, walkways and roads. Work consists of the operation of at least one-third of the time of light self-propelled equipment such as small front-end loaders, tractor mowers and snowplows with or without wing attachments.

Highway Equipment Operator
  • Operates heavy dump trucks to transport paving material to paving operations.
  • Operates mud jacks to pump lime and cement slurry mixture under settled concrete slabs to restore them to their original line.
  • Operates maintainer to push ridges of dirt from under side guard rails out onto the slope side of the road.
  • Operates heavy dump trucks with plow, wing and spreader attachments to simultaneously plow snow and control ice.
  • Operates eductor truck to remove dirt and debris from catch basins and drop inlets.
  • Checks fluid levels, tire pressure, safety devices and control mechanisms of machines prior to operation.
  • Starts, stops, steers and controls machine in a safe, efficient and effective manner to perform assigned tasks.
  • Monitors gauges and fluid levels of machine during operation.
  • Maintains daily record of work performed and materials used.
  • Performs routine maintenance and repairs on machine to insure safe and efficient operations.
  • Pumps gas and adds or drains water and/or antifreeze to radiator, oil to crankcase, air to tires and hydraulic fluid to reservoirs.
  • Changes tires on machine as needed.
  • Replaces burned-out or broken lamp bulbs.
  • Washes machine after use.
  • Changes oil and spark plugs.
  • Changes oil, fuel, air and hydraulic filters.
  • May perform tasks and activities listed in the Standard for Laborer #6961000.
  • May on occasion, operate equipment listed as appropriate for either of the classes described in this standard, Motor Vehicle Operator, Crane and Shovel Operator or Maintenance Helper.
  • Be aware of, understand, and follow all university policies.
MACHINES, TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED

Positions in these classes operate any of the machines listed as appropriate for their class in this standard. They also use wrenches, pliers, screwdrivers and assorted other hand tools to perform routine maintenance and repair work on machines. They also on occasion may operate equipment listed as appropriate for the other class described in this standard and Motor Vehicle Operator, Crane and Shovel Operator and Maintenance Helper.

Requirements:
  • Possession of a valid state driver license
  • Good knowledge of the operation of a variety of self-propelled equipment.
  • Basic knowledge of the Vehicle and Traffic Law as it applies to the safe and legal operation of the assigned equipment.
  • Basic knowledge of the routine repair and maintenance work needed by equipment.
  • Ability to operate assigned machine in a safe and effective manner.
  • Ability to understand and follow simple oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to perform routine repairs and maintenance on equipment.
  • Ability to perform medium to heavy physical labor.
This position has been designated as an Essential Services Personnel position. It is the policy of Fredonia that employees designated as essential will be required to provide support by performing their normal and customary duties in the event of an emergency. Such service is required to maintain university properties and services in the event of an emergency. The essential personnel will vary depending on the nature and scope of the emergency.
  • One year of experience in the operation of tractors or other self-propelled equipment and possession of a valid New York State driver's license appropriate for the type of vehicle operated.
  • Experience operating backhoes and excavating experience preferred.
  • Must possess a valid non-conditional nor restricted New York State CDL Driver's license at time of appointment.
  • Applicants must be physically able to perform moderate to heavy physical labor. Must be able to stand for long periods. Must be willing to work in hot, cold and rainy weather.
  • Applicant must have ability to understand and carry out written and verbal instructions.
  • Must be available for additional hours should it be necessary to meet the operating needs of the department for special events such as Open House, Commencement, snow removal, etc. May be required to work 3rd shift (11:00 p.m. to 7:30 a.m.) during the winter months.
Seniority for transfer or promotion is the length of continuous service in the Operational Services Bargaining Unit. Seniority applies only to those who meet the posted qualifications/job requirements, meet the legitimate operating needs of the department, and have the ability to perform duties and responsibilities satisfactorily. The requirement to prove qualification shall rest with the employee.

The Preferred & Transfer List must be given preference.

Since the activities of other employees depend upon the performance of the employee in this position, reliable attendance is required.

This is a full-time, 12-month, probationary, contingent permanent, SG07, CSEA represented position with an entry level salary of $37,121.
