Why does the job exist?

The incumbent will maintain interstates, roads, roadways and highways for the safety of the traveling public.

How does it get done?

The incumbent will operate single axle dump trucks, large or small front-end loaders, some pull type tractors, self-propelled brooms, and rollers. Incumbent performs a variety of skilled maintenance duties required in the patrol and uses various hand tools. The incumbent will also perform snow removal in the winter season, respond to emergency operations including call outs and remove trash and dead animals from Right-of-Way.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have experience in the following:

- Roadway maintenance activities,
- Basic traffic control experience,
- Operating medium to heavy-duty equipment,
- Using various tools, and
- Customer service.

Minimum Qualification

High School diploma or equivalent and six (6) months of experience maintaining roads and operating medium to heavy-duty equipment to include loader, five- and ten-yard dump trucks, self-propelled brooms, rollers, or mowers. Must possess a valid drivers license and a valid Class B Commercial Drivers License (CDL), (or equivalent licenses from another state) within one (1) year of hire. This position may require Herbicide, Tanker and/or Hazmat endorsement.

Employment Requirements

This position is designated a safety sensitive position within the meaning of the Omnibus Transportation Employee Testing Act of 1991 and must abide by all provisions of the Federal Omnibus Transportation Testing Act. Employment is subject to preemployment and random drug testing, in accordance with all terms and conditions of federal and state law, rules and regulations in relation to alcohol and/or drug testing. Employment requires successful completion of a pre-employment physical and drug test; employment is conditional pending results. Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License and must have or obtain a Class B Commercial Driver's License within one (1) year of hire. Tanker Endorsement may be required. Business/personal reference check and Driver's License verification are also required, and employment is conditional pending results. Must successfully pass demonstrated abilities test with a 75% or better.

Working Conditions

Work is performed primarily in the field in varying weather conditions - hot or cold, humidity, wind, rain and snow, exposure to sunlight, dust, pollen, chemicals, exposure to moving mechanical parts, high precarious places, toxic fumes/chemicals and/or airborne particles, rough/rugged terrain, noxious plants and infected trash, exposure to hazardous chemicals, insects and reptiles, loud noises, confined spaces, stressful situations, subject to falls and bruises, considerable physical strain, high speed/high volume traffic, irregular hours day or night, subject to call out for emergencies, heavy lifting, sitting/standing, bending, squatting, climbing, reaching, kneeling and crawling for extended periods of time may be required. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. Extended or irregular hours day or night; to include nighttime work and snow removal as applicable are required.
