DESCRIPTION

Performs entry-level duties in the fields of industrial hygiene, ergonomics, occupational safety, environmental health, laboratory safety, pest control, environmental health (sanitation), environmental protection, hazardous materials control, hazardous waste management, fire safety, radiation safety, and emergency services, and uses basic concepts / equipment. Assists higher level EH&S Specialists. Performs tasks from detailed instructions and established procedures on typically non-complex assignments in support of professional program(s). Work is regularly reviewed for understanding of professional concepts and following defined policies and procedures.The Hazardous Materials Business Plan (HMBP) Chemical Inventory Specialist works under supervision and performs entry level professional duties across the UC San Diego organization in support of Environmental Affairs, Hazardous Materials Business Planning, Chemical Inventory, and hazardous materials emergency response. Using Computer Aided Drawing (CAD), California Environmental Reporting System (CERS), Geographical Information System (GIS) and customized database software, the incumbent develops and maintains HMBP and building floor plans and evacuation maps to support public safety and the hazardous materials and environmental compliance/ protection programs. Duties include notification and coordination of chemical inventory audits with Principal Investigators (PI) and research staff, maintaining the chemical inventory schedule, data entry and quality control, chemical classification research, assignment of hazard classification to chemicals, and communicating significant risk factors from chemical inventories. Assist with building plan hazardous materials documentation. Record changes in chemical usage information. Learns how to supervise of student employees to ensure established procedures are followed. Generate reports, identify and report problems with EH&S applications and databases. Perform fume hood, safety shower, eyewash station tests and manage data from these tests as needed. Ensure first aid kits are installed, tracked and stocked. Provide support with Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasure Plan. Respond to hazardous material spills and chemical emergencies, assisting with hazardous materials clean up. Other related duties as directed in support of organizational goals within the classification of EHS Specialist 1.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field; or an equivalent combination of experience and training; and skills and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.
  • Basic knowledge / understanding of relevant EH&S field(s), and related regulations. Basic knowledge of chemistry principals, chemical health and safety, analytical techniques, chemical compatibility and spill cleanup procedures including the proper application of Personal Protective Equipment. Basic knowledge of hazardous materials management systems, and facility hazard identification plans. Knowledge of safe emergency hazardous materials spill response.
  • Organizational skills to plan, organize, and prioritize work. Ability to organize, exercise good judgment, take initiative, set priorities, meet deadlines and schedule tasks to complete projects effectively and efficiently with high attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Written and interpersonal communication skills to communicate effectively. Interpersonal skills, including tact, diplomacy, flexibility, and the ability to communicate effectively with faculty, administrators, staff, students, outside agencies and the general public.
  • Skill in following basic instructions and providing input and feedback as required.
  • Basic skills to appropriately use technology and relevant scientific equipment as required. Basic skill to complete work tasks on a computer, including data entry, data analysis, word processing, report preparation, spreadsheet designand database queries.
  • Basic knowledge in the selection and use of personal protective equipment (PPE) to understand proper application anduse of respirators, gloves, eye protection and protective clothing. Ability to learn how to monitor and train others.
  • Ability and willingness to return to campus on short notice during work hours and non-work hours for emergencies (earthquake, fire, hazardous material spills, etc.).
  • Ability to categorize and classify known and unknown chemicals.
  • Ability to clearly and concisely relay hazardous material information to staff, faculty, research labs, and students.
  • Ability to learn how to apply various training techniques to conduct training sessions to a diverse community of staff, faculty, and students with different awareness levels.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • DOJ/FBI/DMV background checks and clearances required prior to hire.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid California Driver License and may participate in the DMV
  • Pull Notice Program as required for daily operation of departmental cars/light trucks.
  • Must be able and willing to wear personal protective equipment and respond to health and safety emergencies.
  • Serve as EHS Response Team member. May be requested to respond back to campus to support the EHS Duty Officer in the event of an after-hours, weekend, or holiday incident involving hazardous materials and/or for services provided within the employee's subject area of expertise.
Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $58,600 - $100,800 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $28.07 - $48.28

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
