Welcome to the Whittier City School District, a Transitional Kindergarten through 8th grade school district with eight elementary schools, two middle schools, and one K-8 school. Job Description / Essential Elements:
INSTRUCTIONAL AIDE

The Instructional Aide is under general supervision, to assist teacher(s) in the supervision of students and resource room operations and routine instructional support; to instruct and reinforce instruction of students individually and perform a variety of instructional activities; perform a variety of supportive tasks and follow-up activities; and do other related work as required.

EXPERIENCE
• A typical qualifying entrance background is experience working with children in a learning environment
• Coursework or training in child growth and development instructional processes desirable:

EDUCATION
• Coursework in computer instruction, instructional technology, and subject matter areas applicable to the assignment
• AA/AS Degree or completion of a minimum of 48 semester college level units and high school graduation or pass the district's NCLB Test

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
• Assists teacher(s) in the implementation of classroom lessons and the appropriate follow-up activities of those lessons.
• Tutors individuals and small groups of students to reinforce and follow up learning activities
• Assists students in the development of appropriate social behaviors
• Assists students by providing routine first aid and determining the need to seek assistance for students with non-routine illness or injuries
• Performs a variety of behavior management and behavior shaping functions
• Assists in the development of instructional materials and classroom bulletin boards.
• Assists in the maintenance of student records and files
• Assists in the implementation of testing programs
• Requisitions, stores and distributes inventory of educational materials, supplies, and equipment
• Assists in the maintenance of a learning environment
• Performs a variety of tasks such as taking roll and completing forms
• Assists with other tasks as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
• Child development and behavior characteristics
• Behavior management and instructional strategies and techniques
• Appropriate English usage, punctuation, spelling, and grammar
• Basic arithmetical concepts
• Routine record storage, retrieval, and management procedures
• Bilingual (Spanish) desirable

Ability to:
• Demonstrate an empathetic, patient, and receptive attitude with all students
• Perform routine basic clerical tasks and operate a variety of educational and office related machines and equipment
• Learn to utilize a variety of appropriate instructional materials and procedures in the enhancement of an educational environment
• Understand and carry out oral and written directions
• Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with children and adults

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The physical requirements indicated below are examples of the physical aspects that this position classification must perform in carrying out essential job functions.

• Persons performing service in this position classification will exert 10 to 20 pounds of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects
• This type of work involves sitting little of the time, and may involve running, walking or standing for brief periods
• Perceiving the nature of sound, near and far vision, depth perception, providing oral information, the manual dexterity to operate business related equipment, and handle and work with various materials and objects are important aspects of this job
