About the Position: The U.S. Military Academy, West Point, NY is an academic institution located in the Hudson River Valley, 50 miles from New York City. Duties

  • Teach an undergraduate philosophy course in the core program of the Department of English and Philosophy at the United States Military Academy with a strong emphasis on ethics and the morality of warfare.
  • Instruct elective courses within our Philosophy major.
  • You will support the personal growth and professional development of cadets in and out of the classroom as a role model for future leaders of the Nation.
  • You will provide cadet counseling and support cadet extracurricular activities.
  • Engage and positively contribute to the scholarship of Just War Theory, the morality of war and peace, or related ethical topics.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Appointment to this position may be subject to a one-year trial period.


Qualifications

This is a full-time term appointment in the excepted service not to exceed 13 Months. Term appointments may be extended beyond the initial term. As a term employee you will be eligible for medical insurance, life insurance, retirement dental and vision. You will be eligible to earn annual leave and sick leave.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must (a) hold a bachelor's degree or higher that included or was supplemented by major study in education or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position, OR (b) possess a combination of education and experience courses equivalent to a major in education, or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position, plus appropriate experience or additional course work that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the 4-year course of study described above.

SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTORS/KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Applicants will be evaluated on the following:

1) Academic Accomplishment (PhD is preferred) in Philosophy; 2) Demonstrated ability to engage in research and positively contribute to the scholarship of Just War Theory, The Morality of War and Peace, or related ethical topics; 3) Ability to contribute to the breadth and depth of philosophical knowledge among faculty in the Philosophy Program; 4) Ability to teach variety of elective courses within Philosophy and demonstrated potential to develop master's level faculty. 5) Ability to positively influence, mentor, assist cadets in their development as future Army Officers;
