General Statement of Duties

Designs, recommends, tests, modifies and maintains LAN and WAN hardware; services and maintains larger and more complex and varied hardware and peripherals; performs related work as required.

Essential Duties

Henrico County is looking for an Entry (Level I) or Junior (Level II) network technician and automation engineer who is customer-service driven and has experience with Cisco networking. Henrico County's Information Technology Department maintains an enterprise-size LAN/WAN and wireless networks, which includes over 70 sites and 6000+ endpoints.

This is an entry level position on the Information Technology Department's Network Team. In this role you will assist with the design, installation, configuration, and maintenance of the network-related architectures. These architectures include Cisco Catalyst Switches, Nexus Switches, Meraki, IOT, etc. Experience based on Cisco Technology is a core requirement.

Essential Duties:
  • Developing prerequisites for networks, routers, switches, wireless and other network devices.
  • Performs configuration of Cisco routers and switches.
  • Assist in the development of network automation and orchestration for routine operational tasks and maintenance.
  • Participates in evaluating all new County projects that have network or connectivity needs.
  • Monitors network systems and hardware for response time, performance, and resource utilization.
  • Assists the Information Technology Service Desk in areas concerning network-related problems, add, move and change requests for all network systems and devices.
  • Provides technical assistance to system users for computer and network connectivity related problems.
  • Assists with evaluation and selection of products & vendors to provide goods and services.
  • Completes installation and configuration of network hardware from designs and specifications provided by senior staff.
  • Assists with the management, administration and maintenance of network infrastructure management platforms (e.g. Solarwinds, LogMonitor, open-source tools or other enterprise applications)
  • Required to work a flexible schedule, after-hours, or work at various locations Countywide as needed.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Experience with Cisco IOS routers and switches. (Cisco CCNA preferred)
  • Technical understanding of routing protocols such as: IGP (EIGRP or OSPF) and EGP (BGP - both ibgp and ebgp)
  • TCP/IP troubleshooting and diagnostic skills; basic working knowledge of Internet backbone connectivity.
  • Thorough understanding of IP sub-netting.
  • Experience creating and updating Microsoft Visio network diagrams.
  • Automation experience with scripting languages (e.g. Ansible/AMX IT automation, python, expect, perl, REST, TCL/Expect, powershell, etc...) for the management and monitoring of network infrastructure through API's.
  • Ability to perform basic command-line network adds, moves and changes.
  • Ability to rack, stack, and install network hardware
  • Physical conditioning that permits activities including but not limited to heavy lifting, bending, stooping, stretching, carrying and moving equipment and supplies up to 40lbs.
  • Develop and maintain documentation related to the installation, administration, and maintenance of infrastructure.
  • Network Event Analysis, Network Analytics, Packet Analysis
  • Demonstrated ability to work under pressure.
  • Ability to work without supervision and function as a self-starter.
  • Effective time management and ability to organize and prioritize tasks.
  • Solid written & verbal communications skills.
  • Ability to keep multiple projects organized amid competing deadlines.
  • Must be able to positively and appropriately represent the County and IT Department with end users in various departments Countywide.


Minimum Qualifications

IT Network/Telecommunications Administrator II: Two year degree in a relevant IT field and two (2) years of relevant work experience; OR: Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

IT Network/Telecommunications Administrator I: Graduation from high school/GED including completion of some relevant coursework at the college level and two (2) years of relevant work experience; OR: Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Requires a valid driver's license to provide support at locations Countywide.

The expected hiring range for this position is $69,538 - $80,039.

This position may be filled at the I or II level depending on the skills and qualifications of the successful incumbent.
