The Dremel lab in the Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Cancer Biology, at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, is seeking a Laboratory Technician level 2 to work on projects investigating herpesvirus (Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) and Kaposi sarcoma herpesvirus (KSHV)) infection in adherent cell models. The lab technician will work closely with the PI to use virology, molecular biology and cell biology techniques to study the mechanisms of herpesvirus gene expression and post-transcriptional regulation. Research activities will include, but not be limited to, propagating and titrating virus stocks, routine tissue culture, flow cytometry, and general molecular biology techniques (nucleic acid isolation, RT-qPCR). The lab technician will also be responsible for laboratory maintenance. This includes training of other personnel, ordering supplies, preparing stock solutions, organizing and maintaining virus stocks.

The successful candidate must have a B.S. degree in biology, or a related field, and at least 6 years of laboratory experience, which may include experience gained while a student. Additional requirements include attention to detail in experimental work and record keeping, ability to handle multiple assignments, self-motivation and eagerness to acquire new skills. Preference will be given to candidates with a background in Virology and/or Molecular Biology and experience with tissue culture techniques.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's in Microbiology, Biology, Biochemistry, or a related science.
  • At least six years of laboratory experience, which may include experience gained while a student.

Preference will be given to candidates with experience in a Virology or Molecular Biology lab and tissue culture techniques.

Physical Demands

This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work requiring finer finger manipulation.
