Lab Specialist Intermediate employees engage in laboratory research by performing complex lab and research related tasks. They are distinguished from Lab Specialist employees by their additional responsibilities related to developing, designing, and conducting increasingly complex research projects. They perform complex tasks independently. They have the authority to adapt methods and procedures to meet the needs of research. They may supervise support personnel and manage budgets.

Job duties include:

(a) assist researchers with gathering samples for evaluation

(b) prepare samples by cutting, mounting, polishing, and etching of various materials

(c) evaluate microstructures using optical and scanning electron microscopy (include elemental analysis)

(d) evaluate corrosion behavior using electrochemical testing of coated and uncoated samples with AC and/or DC techniques

(e) perform molecular analysis using FTIR spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction, x-ray fluorescent spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy and microscopy

(f) perform thermal analysis using dynamic mechanical and thermogravimetric analyzers. It is expected that candidates may well require training by us on some of the above instruments and processes detailed above.

While this is a UVA position, the job responsibilities will be allocated between 90% with the Virginia Transportation Research Council (VTRC https://vtrc.virginia.gov/ ) and 10% with the UVA Nanoscale Materials Characterization Facility (NMCF https://www.engineering.virginia.edu/NMCF ).

The VTRC has its headquarters on UVA grounds though most of the material analysis activities will be conducted in the NMCF.

Light travel, primarily in Virginia, will occasionally be required.

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor of Science degree in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Physics or Chemistry.

1 - 3 (or more) years of experience in a basic science laboratory.

The candidate should have the ability to collect and prepare samples, execute analysis and provide results in a succinct and coherent manner and have strong written and verbal communication skills as well as strong organization skills.

This position will remain open until filled. This is an Exempt level, benefited position. This position will not sponsor applicants for work visas. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education: Bachelor's degree.

Experience: 6 years of experience in a lab technician role. Master's degree may substitute for required experience. 9 years of lab-related experience accepted in lieu of degree.

Licensure: None.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.
