The Beirne B. Carter Center Immunology Research (CIC) at the University of Virginia (UVA) School of Medicine seeks applicants for a Laboratory Specialist to become a participating member of the Ewald Lab. The incumbent will participate in research studying host-pathogen interactions and chronic inflammatory disease and contribute to lab management. The successful candidate will be expected to:
  • Participate in research experiments involving the infection of mice and murine immune cells with the protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii.
  • Use experimental methods including handling mice, small tissue dissection, histology and immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry, cognitive performance, genotyping, and real-time PCR.
  • Work with students, post-docs, and other members of the lab to assist in conducting all aspects of experiments.
  • Perform lab management tasks including ordering and receiving, equipment service, and coordinate schedules for lab meetings and shared equipment.
  • Compliance with University, Federal, and State policies and procedures; and consulting with the Principle Investigator regularly.
  • In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.
Minimum Requirements:

Lab Specialist

Education: Bachelor's degree.

Experience: 3 years of experience. Master's degree may substitute for required experience.6 years of experience accepted in lieu of degree.

Preferred knowledge skills and abilities:
  • Self-guided and creative in seeking possible solutions to experimental/design challenges.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Experience working with laboratory animals.
