DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

The Marine Biology Research Division (MBRD) consists of research groups broadly in the fields of cell and developmental biology, ecology, evolutionary, and conservation biology, microbiology, and the physiology of marine organisms that encompasses more than 20 laboratories. Cell and Developmental Biology: biochemistry, functional genomics, ecotoxicology, and morphogenesis of marine invertebrates, including sea urchins, corals, and mollusks. Ecology, Evolution, and Conservation Biology: phytoplankton ecology, coral reef ecology, evolution and development of marine invertebrates, conservation of marine organisms and habitats. Microbiology: diversity and distribution of marine viruses, bacteria, and phytoplankton, including symbiosis with marine animals, biogeochemistry, secondary metabolite production, and microbial adaptations to environmental extremes and other environmental stressors. Physiology: biomechanics and locomotion, sensory biology, bioluminescence, and biochemistry of marine animals, including host-symbiont relationships.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Under supervision, the laboratory assistant will be carrying out standard coral ecophysiological and engineering experiments. The incumbent will be responsible for animal husbandry, the maintenance of algal and bacterial cultures as well as performing a range of repetitive laboratory and/or field experimental procedures. This includes making media for cell culture and handling of corals. The incumbent is also expected to fulfill administrative duties around the lab, as needed and as directed by the PI. Incumbent will be responsible for coordinating laboratory meetings, managing equipment and supplies, maintaining laboratory safety standards, and hands-on training of new personnel.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Graduation from high school or a GE Diploma and two (2) years of laboratory experience or two (2) years of college including courses in the natural, physical or social sciences and one (1) year of laboratory experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge and experience with basic laboratory equipment such as centrifuges, micro-pipettes, biosafety cabinets, incubators, autoclaves, balances, pH meters, and microscopes.
  • Knowledge and experience in general lab protocols. Knowledge of basic laboratory safety requirements and procedures, and ability to maintain up-to-date safety training certification.
  • Familiarity with general animal husbandry tasks.
  • Experience in basic lab techniques such as making buffers, checking pH solutions and photographic imaging.
  • General knowledge of coral science; including relevant laboratory techniques.
  • Experience working with and in the preparation of scientific reagents including common buffers and stock solutions.
  • Experience in making algal media and maintaining algal cultures.
  • Experience in data collection
  • Ability to accurately maintain lab records, including use of lab notebooks and online, with strict attention to detail.
  • Must be willing and able to work with corals.
  • Ability to order and maintain laboratory supplies.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $45,999 - $54,079 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $22.03 - $25.90

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
