Job Summary:

This position will support the laboratory of Linda Barlow at the University of Colorado School of Medicine.

Our lab investigates the function of adult stem cells in maintaining the taste system, and the mechanisms of taste disruption associated with chemo- and radiotherapy. The successful candidate will assist with a project aiming to understand the cellular and molecular mechanisms of chemotherapy-induced taste disruption.

The Laboratory Sciences Professional is also expected to work in cooperation with lab members and the lab manager, Jennifer Scott, on a daily basis, and perform several aspects of lab maintenance which may include: Biohazardous, hazardous and sharps waste disposal; ordering, receiving and organizing of lab supplies and reagents; maintain lab organization and cleanliness with the help of lab members.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform in vitro culture of taste organoids and experiments involving laboratory mice.
  • Maintain the mouse colony, treat mice and organoids with anti-cancer drugs, test behavioral taste of mice, and collect mouse tongues.
  • Perform cryosectioning, immunohistochemistry, imaging, and gene expression analysis by qRT-PCR and Hybridization Chain Reaction (HCR) fluorescence and confocal microscopy.
  • Utilize organizational skills to collect data and complete entry and analysis.
  • Keep careful records.

Onsite - this role is expected to work onsite and is located in Aurora, CO.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

Entry Level:

  • Bachelor's degree in biology, molecular biology, chemistry, genetics, or related field.
    • A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor's degree on a year-for-year basis.


Intermediate Level:

  • Bachelor's degree in biology, molecular biology, chemistry, genetics, or related field.
    • A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor's degree on a year-for-year basis.
  • One (1) year of professional-level research experience.


Senior Level:

  • Bachelor's degree in biology, molecular biology, chemistry, genetics, or related field.
    • A combination of education and related technical/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for the bachelor's degree on a year-for-year basis.
  • Two (2) years of professional level research experience.


Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in biology, molecular biology, chemistry, genetics, or related field.
  • One (1) to (3) years of experience in an experimental or wet laboratory.
  • Experience with animal models.
  • Experience with mouse handling, cell culture, RNA processing for qRT-PCR, immunohistochemistry and cryosectioning.

  • Knowledge of laboratory techniques including safety procedures and techniques.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution.

  • Background knowledge in mouse models, cell culture, qRT-PCR and immunohistochemistry.

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as:

Entry Level: $45,000 - $57,240

Intermediate Level: $48,970 - $62,290

Senior Level: $52,941 - $67,341

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position may be eligible for overtime compensation, depending on the level.
