Job Description:

L3Harris is seeking an experienced Lead Mechanical Engineer in our Orlando, FL location. The selected individual will manage large, complex project initiatives of substantial importance to the organization, while working with and providing guidance to a team of mechanical engineers. This individual must be capable of devising solutions to complex engineering problems both independently and by soliciting input from other technical subject matter experts across the organization.

Essential Functions:

  • Research and analyze data such as customer design proposals, specifications, and manuals to determine feasibility of design or application.
  • Research, plan, design, and provide guidance to other engineers for mechanical and electromechanical products and systems.
  • Analyze, design and test products or systems such as instruments, controls, and mechanical, thermal, hydraulic, or heat transfer systems.
  • Plan and possibly direct engineering personnel in fabrication of test control apparatus and equipment, and development of methods and procedures for testing products or systems
  • Position may require occasional overtime.
  • 20% travel (10 - 20%) as required to meet critical schedule milestones.
  • Ability to obtain US security clearance.


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree and minimum 9 years of prior mechanical engineering experience. Graduate Degree and a minimum of 7 years of prior mechanical engineering experience. In lieu of a degree, minimum of 13 years of prior mechanical engineering experience.
  • 5+ years of experience with basic material selection, sheet metal design practices, basic machining practices and hardware selection.


Preferred Additional Skills:

  • Ability to communicate, both verbally and in writing, with technical and non technical professionals at all levels.
  • Detail-oriented and able to perform Peer Reviews of fellow engineers' designs and drawings.Proficiency with PTC's Creo 8.0 or later revision, especially with detail part design, large assembly management and drawing documentation.
  • Experience with aerospace flight vehicle design.
  • Proficiency in design of mechanical ground support equipment and handling procedures / methods
  • Understanding of mechanical analysis requirements and techniques used for initial sizing and design verification.
  • Proficiency in non-conforming material review of root cause / corrective action and disposition instructions.
  • Proficiency with hands-on engineering support of manufacturing.
  • Proficiency in preparing conceptual models and design review materials.
  • Experience in preparation of estimates for design tasks.
  • Ability to communicate, both verbally and in writing, with technical and non-technical professionals at all levels.
  • Ability to create and guide the development of aerospace structure designs including structure assemblies, component installations, and bracket designs that conform to requirements documents.
  • Ability to assist in requirements verification of those designs.
  • Knowledge of, and experience with ASME Y14.5-1994 and generating detailed documentation of parts, assemblies and installations.
  • Ability to serve as a GD&T SME for the organization.
  • Ability to prepare or lead the preparation of part lists.
  • Knowledge of engineering change document preparation and impact assessments.
