Sitting on the edge of the Pacific Ocean and on a vibrant CSU campus, the Sutro Library holds the remaining materials from Adolph Sutro's historic collection of rare books and manuscripts. Our collections span all time periods and all regions of the globe with particular strengths in thirteenth- and fourteenth-century Yemenite Hebraica, English social history, and one of the most comprehensive collections on the Mexican Republic in the world.

Although not part of the original Adolph Sutro collection, there is large genealogy collection which is one of the largest genealogy collections in the U.S.

Desirable Qualifications In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
  • Strong customer service skills
  • Current or prior experience performing duties equivalent to that of a Library Technical Assistant I
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Experience processing interlibrary loans.
  • Experience duplicating and scanning materials.
  • Familiarity with the care, handling, and rehousing needs of special collections and/or fragile collections
  • Experience working with academic scholars and graduate and undergraduate students.
  • Experience using bibliographic utilities, including integrated library systems (preferably Alma), PCs using a wide range of application software, OCLC functionality
  • Experience with library collections maintenance, including shelving, shelf reading, shifting, and weeding projects.

  • Do you have an MSLIS/MLIS or equivalent degree (Please answer Yes/No or explain if it is in progress.

  • Your experience assessing historical research value of archival materials and rare books.

  • Your experience Cataloging different formats including manuscripts, photographs and other visual resources, newspapers, periodicals, maps, ephemera, microfiche, microfilm, artifacts, and audio and moving image materials.
  • Your experience creating bibliographic records, name headings based on National Authority File; specialized thesauri including the Library of Congress Thesaurus of Graphic Materials; and encoding in the MARC format.
  • Your familiarity with anti-racist and inclusive archival description initiatives and a demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, belonging and anti-racism.
  • Your experience providing reference services in person and virtually to patrons from all backgrounds.
  • Your experience evaluating materials for digitization and with digitizing materials.
  • Your understanding of intellectual property, copyright, privacy, and other access issues.
