As a Long-Term Disability Claims Specialist, your primary responsibilities will be assessing eligibility for Long Term Disability benefits, and reviewing for ongoing medical, vocational, and financial accuracy. The ability to manage both new and ongoing Long-Term Disability claims in a way that balances accuracy and efficiency requires a significant amount of time and perseverance. Training is just the beginning, and we have a robust mentoring program which will last approximately 4-6 months. The Key systems that you will be using on a regular basis are the claims system itself, plus multiple websites to gather information and work with our vendors. Additionally, you will be regularly accessing the Microsoft suite, especially Outlook, Teams for chat and video calls. Having a great attitude is key to being a strong member of our team. You will also need strong analytic skills and communication skills - both written and verbal, and the ability to adapt to technology and change. You will be involved in both answering incoming phone calls and making outbound phone calls as needed. This is a remote position, so you must have work area compliant with remote worker policy. And, while you should be able to work independently, you still must be able to work as a team and take direction from your Team Leaders. You will be required to take breaks as outlined in our policy, including a lunch break, which can vary based on flexibility by person and coverage

This position is full-time, Monday - Friday. Employees are required to work our normal business hours of 8:00am - 5:00pm. It may be necessary, given the business need, to work occasional overtime or weekends.

We offer 3-5 weeks of paid training. The hours of the training will be based on schedule or will be discussed on your first day of employment.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Providing expertise or general claims support to teams in reviewing, researching, investigating, negotiating, processing, and adjudicating Long Term Disability claims.
  • Communicating ongoing status and decisions both in writing and verbally
  • Authorizes the appropriate payment or refers claims to Team Lead or Manager for validation of adverse or over limit approvals

Required Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma / GED OR equivalent work experience
  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • 1+ years reviewing and rendering initial liability determinations on Long Term Disability claims.
  • 1+ years of experience issuing monthly payments on Long Term Disability claims
  • Experience with Microsoft Word (ability to create, modify and send documents)
  • Experience with Microsoft Excel (ability to create, modify and send spreadsheets)
  • Ability to work full-time, Monday - Friday. Employees are required to work our normal business hours of 8:00am - 5:00pm. It may be necessary, given the business need, to work occasional overtime or weekends.

Telecommuting Requirements:

  • Ability to keep all company sensitive documents secure (if applicable)
  • Required to have a dedicated work area established that is separated from other living areas and provides information privacy.
  • Must live in a location that can receive a UnitedHealth Group approved high-speed internet connection or leverage an existing high-speed internet service.

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. UnitedHealth Group complies with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
