Position Description

Assists a Maintenance Section Supervisor in overseeing work completed by the crews and contractors, which provides a safe driving thoroughfare within a designated geographical area. Leads the work of Transportation Maintenance Crew Chiefs, technical and clerical staff. Work requires responding to emergency notification on an as-needed basis. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Essential Duties:

  • Assists in administration of the maintenance section.
  • Inspects roads while in route to and from job site and reports problems to supervisors.
  • Inspects work performed by maintenance contractors.
  • Maintains records on materials and equipment used and employee time sheets.
  • Operates light and heavy equipment.
  • Oversees the work of designated maintenance inspectors and sign technicians.
  • Performs some maintenance and repair on equipment and trains crew members on the use of equipment.
  • Serves as a lead worker by scheduling daily work assignments; serving as a resource for complex questions and troubleshooting of problems;
  • presenting operational updates to the supervisor; providing input on team members' career conversations; and approving leave requests to ensure operational coverage.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:

Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.

Experience: 5 years in roadway maintenance or construction related work. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated part-time equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis . Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Must have a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with "N" endorsement.


Competencies:

  • Methods, procedures, equipment, and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance work.
  • Applicable plans, specifications and estimates preparation, review, processing and compliance requirements.
  • The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices
  • Design, testing and quality control of materials used in the construction and maintenance of highways and related structures.
  • Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines, and specification codes
  • Coordinating labor, materials, and equipment
  • Inventory/stock control procedures
  • Maintenance contract inspection procedures
  • Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines, and specification codes
  • Operating light and heavy highway equipment
  • Leading, assigning, reviewing, and monitoring the work of others
  • Prioritizing and organizing work assignments
  • Using applicable hand and power tools, equipment, and mechanical devices of the trade
  • Maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others
  • Administrative support practices and procedures to include writing, editing and report writing techniques, recording, meeting notes, record keeping and records management.


Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and above 100 degrees for more than one hour
  • Subject to noise

  • Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs. at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.
  • Stooping-bending body downward and forward by bending spine at waist
  • Crouching-bending body downward and forward by bending leg(s) and spine.
  • Standing-prolonged periods of time
  • Repetitive Motion-substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and fingers
  • Visual Acuity-operate motor vehicles and heavy equipment.
  • Visual Acuity-determine work quality/make general observations of facilities/structures.

  • This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre-employment physical.
  • Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions. This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing.

  • A math simulation question will be part of the selection process..
  • Required to work hours other than 8 to 5.
  • Required to work under exposure to inclement weather conditions.
  • Required to wear personal protective equipment provided by employer and comply with all safety requirements.
  • Must be able to report for duty within 45 minutes of notification on a 24-hour basis to respond to emergency situations.
