The City of Roanoke is currently seeking an energetic, dedicated team player, to fill a vacant Sign Marking Maintenance Technician Level IV position in our Public Works/ Transportation Division/ Traffic Sign Shop. This role supervises and participates in the work of a 6-9 person crew engaged in a variety of traffic markings and signs in the right of way. Maintains daily/weekly/monthly spreadsheets of all traffic marking related records and reports. Responsible for developing a line-striping database in GIS. Also responsible for creating and closing out work orders/service requests using the VueWorks work order system. Will operate a long line striping truck. Will assist the Traffic Operations Supervisor in scheduling of department work duties. Will participate in snow removal operations and will be on call for emergency barricade duties and special events on a rotating basis. Requires experience with Excel and knowledge of the (MUTCD) Manual for Uniform Traffic Control Devices including proper work zone set up. High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and 3 to 5 year's experiences with traffic markings and signs. Must possess a valid Class B CDL driver's license when hired. Must also possess an Intermediate work-zone certification within the first year of being hired.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
  • Discuss job requirements and receives detailed instructions from supervisor
  • Inspects sign and marking installations in progress to ensure conformance with current MUTCD standards
  • Requisitions necessary equipment and materials in daily operation
  • Maintains accurate shop daily operation log sheets and checklists using VueWorks system
  • Leading crews and give field instructions and make field decisions
  • Sets up work zones as needed to ensure according to the Virginia Work Area Protection Manual
  • Installs and repairs traffic signs and pavement marking throughout the City
  • Assists crew with laying down hot applied thermoplastic
  • Installs, repairs, and maintains street paining such as double yellow and skips
  • Assists the sign fabricator with making signs
  • Sets up work zones as needed according to the Virginia Work Area Protection Manual
  • Keeps work order records using the Transportation current work order VueWorks system
  • Assists the shop supervisor during emergency events and work with police, fire/EMS and other governmental functions
  • Participates in the City of Roanoke snow removal operations
  • Any other task above and beyond as deemed necessary by the Sign Shop Supervisor
QUALIFICATIONS:

A High school diploma or general education degree (GED) is required

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Depending on area of assignment, may require possession of an appropriate class A, B or C commercial driver's license. May require master-level licensure in an area of skilled trades. May require registered technician license and Certified Fertilizer Applicator certification. May be required to qualify for certification as a State Inspector.
