Position Summary: Under the direction of the Chief Nursing Officer, is responsible for supervising and assisting in the daily clinical management for the unit(s) of the assigned shift, to accomplish the specific unit/department objectives. Works in close collaboration with the Trauma and Stroke Medical Director and Program Coordinator (Manager) RN Trauma and Stroke.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
Qualifications and activities for this role are as follows:
• Obtaining 16 hours (internal or external) of trauma related continuing education per year.
• Clinical activities: planning and implementation of clinical protocols and practice guidelines, monitoring care of in-hospital patients and functioning as a resource for clinical practice.
• Education responsibilities: provide hospital and regional staff development, case review and direct community trauma education and prevention programs.
• Administration: manage the operational, personnel and financial aspects of the trauma program. Represent trauma on hospital and regional trauma committees.
• Supervision of the trauma registry: supervise collection, coding, scoring and developing processes for validation of data. Design the registry to facilitate performance improvement, reports, and research while maintaining confidentiality.
• Consultant and liaison: work as a resource for all departments within the hospital for trauma and act as a liaison for Emergency Medical Services.
• Research: maintain an active role in research projects and distribution of findings.
• Involvement in trauma care systems: participate in the development of trauma care systems on community, state, provincial or national levels.

Qualifications:
Required:
• Must have had at least five (5) years of nursing experience
• Bachelor's degree in Nursing or must be obtained within 2 years of hire or transfer.
• Must have a minimum of 6 months experience as an Emergency Department Manager.
• Three (3) years of experience in Emergency Nursing and trauma center environment
• Current BLS, ALS, and PALS Certification
• Must complete TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Curriculum) within one (6) months of hire/accepting position.
• NIHSS certification, if not current must be obtained within twelve (12) months of hire/transfer date
• Professional Certification in Emergency Nursing (CEN) and/or Critical Care (CCRN) within sixty (60) months of hire/transfer
Preferred:
• Master's degree in Nursing
• Previous supervisory experience; minimum two (2) years in leadership/management role
• Certification in Emergency Nursing (CEN) and/or Critical Care (CCRN)
• TNCC/ENPC Instructor Certification
• Experience in collecting, coding and scoring trauma records and maintaining the Trauma Registry
• Six (6) months experience in coordinating process and performance improvement activities
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
- Maintains quality services through consistent application of policies, procedures, protocols and standards of care.
- Clinical resources and support for staff.
- Assists in identifying problems related to the functioning of the unit, recommends solutions, and takes corrective action to resolve them.
- Coordinates patient placement in and out of unit.
- Creates and maintains a work environment conducive to effective communication, team building and professionalism.
- Assesses and arranges staffing for unit.
- Provides effective input into hiring, termination, discipline, assignment, and evaluation of work of ED tech, Unit secretaries, and RN's.
- Participates in orientation of new employees.
- Monitors and assures availability of unit supplies.
- Communicates and collaborates with staff members, management, physicians, other units and departments regarding patient and quality care issues.
- Assists in evaluation of employees working in this Unit.
- Participates in non-direct patient-care activities including Hospital committees/task forces, quality improvement, and research, educational and other related activities.
- Maintains knowledge of current trends and developments in the field by reading appropriate books, journals, and other literature.
- Participates in supervisory duties as required, i.e., helping with relief of open shifts, on-call alternating holidays.
- Staff Education - input and/or coordination of unit in-services.
- Coaches staff to develop stronger decision-making skills.
- Work to improve patient care standards within the area of responsibility.
- Participates in immediate resolution of patient incidents and patient/family concerns.
- Responsible for functioning as the Injury Prevention coordinator and as liaison to the Trauma and Stroke Program
