As a material technician within the Kaufman/Rockall Area Office Materials Laboratory, this position performs quality assurance testing of various materials used for highway construction and maintenance projects.

Salary Range for Each Position Level

Materials Technician I

B18 - $42,521 - $67,671/year

Materials Technician II

B19 - $45,243 - $72,408/year

Materials Technician III

B20 - $48,158 - $77,477/year

Position Description

Material Technician I, II, and III:

Performs advanced material tests and manufacturing process inspections in laboratories, plants and/or at points of supply. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.

Essential Duties:

Material Technician I, II and III:

  • Advises supervisor of inspection activities and problems at plants and assists in coordinating inspection
  • Handles material or production problems referred by less experienced inspectors
  • Informs plant personnel of material or production problems, rejects substandard material and assists in determining cause for material problems
  • Maintains a diary of inspection or test details
  • Performs tests and inspection duties
  • Records test data on worksheets and performs calculations to convert raw data into specific units of measurement
  • Reports test results to field construction personnel and may assist in determining cause for material problems


Material Technician II and III:

  • Handles problem calls from producers, suppliers, inspectors and construction project field personnel
  • Interprets plans and specifications and negotiates with producers and suppliers to resolve differences


Material Technician III:

  • Coordinates test and inspection results with engineers, inspectors, material producers and suppliers and field construction personnel and may assist in determining cause for material problems.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned


Minimum Qualifications:

Education:

Material Technician I, II, and III - High School Grad or Equivalent in general education.

Experience:

MT I = 6 years' experience; M T II = 7 years' experience; M T III = 8 years' experience

*Laboratory work, material inspection or other engineering related activities. (Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent). Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
  • Must have or obtain certification in one of the listed HMA certifications within 12 months of date of hire:
    • Hot Mix Asphalt Spec-IA Cert
    • Hot Mix Asphalt Spec-IB Cert
    • Hot Mix Asphalt Spec-II Cert


Competencies:

  • Applicable testing methods, processes and procedures; Interpreting applicable information
  • Conducting laboratory tests; Using computers and applicable programs, applications, and systems
  • Maintaining a safe and effective working relationship with others
  • Giving attention to detail and reviewing information to identify any errors and problems, ensuring consistency and clarity of information


Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Subject to outside environmental conditions; no effective weather protection
  • Subject to noise
  • Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or another device
  • Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs
  • Standing-prolonged periods of time
  • Close Visual Acuity-work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading

  • Must have or obtain certification in one of the above listed HMA certifications within 12 months of date of hire.
