AUTOMOTIVE MECHANIC JOB DESCRIPTION

POSITION TITLE : Automotive Mechanic

SUPERVISES : N/A

JOB GOAL : To assist in keeping the school system's buses in a state of operating excellence as to prevent interruptions to the educational programs offered by the Board.

QUALIFICATIONS :

1. Possesses a high school diploma or equivalent.

2. Possesses basic working knowledge of automotive maintenance and preventive care.

3. Possesses a valid state driver's license.

4. Demonstrates aptitude or competence for assigned responsibilities.

5. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

REPORTS TO : Transportation Manager/Foreman/Lead Mechanic

SALARY : To be determined by the local Board of Education

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

Essential functions may include, but are not limited to:
  1. Performs first line maintenance on assigned vehicles on a daily basis.
  2. Reports to Transportation Manager/Foreman immediately any problems with the buses.
  3. Assists drivers with routine vehicle safety inspiration.
  4. Measures fuel supply on a weekly basis.
  5. Maintains an efficient and effective system of routine automotive and preventive care.
  6. Promotes high standards of safety and good housekeeping methods in all work connected areas.
  7. Assists in the diagnosing, assigning, and repairing of district automotive equipment.
  8. Assists in maintaining a correct inventory of supplies and equipment.
  9. Performs such other tasks and assumes such other responsibilities as the Transportation Manager/Foreman may assign or delegate.


REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to read and understand maps.
  • Ability to pass state skill test, state written test, department of transportation physical and MDE Basic Training Program.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and community.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form.
  • Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.


WORK ENVIRONMENT:
  • While performing duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in temperatures above 100 and below 32 and will occasionally walk on slippery surfaces.
  • Must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints and interact with public and other workers.
  • Regularly works near moving mechanical bus and equipment.
  • May frequently work with toxic or caustic chemicals such as petroleum products. Degreasers, gases, fumes and sprays.
  • Occasionally works in outside weather conditions and is occasionally exposed to fumes and airborne particles.
  • Has direct responsibility for the safety and well-being of others.
  • The noise level in the work environment is frequently loud to where you have to raise your voice to be heard.


TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Twelve months. Other contract terms and salary to be established by the Board.

EVALUATION:

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on Evaluation of Support Personnel.
