AUTOMOTIVE MECHANIC JOB DESCRIPTION
POSITION TITLE : Automotive Mechanic
SUPERVISES : N/A
JOB GOAL : To assist in keeping the school system's buses in a state of operating excellence as to prevent interruptions to the educational programs offered by the Board.
QUALIFICATIONS :
1. Possesses a high school diploma or equivalent.
2. Possesses basic working knowledge of automotive maintenance and preventive care.
3. Possesses a valid state driver's license.
4. Demonstrates aptitude or competence for assigned responsibilities.
5. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.
REPORTS TO : Transportation Manager/Foreman/Lead Mechanic
SALARY : To be determined by the local Board of Education
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
Essential functions may include, but are not limited to:
- Performs first line maintenance on assigned vehicles on a daily basis.
- Reports to Transportation Manager/Foreman immediately any problems with the buses.
- Assists drivers with routine vehicle safety inspiration.
- Measures fuel supply on a weekly basis.
- Maintains an efficient and effective system of routine automotive and preventive care.
- Promotes high standards of safety and good housekeeping methods in all work connected areas.
- Assists in the diagnosing, assigning, and repairing of district automotive equipment.
- Assists in maintaining a correct inventory of supplies and equipment.
- Performs such other tasks and assumes such other responsibilities as the Transportation Manager/Foreman may assign or delegate.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Ability to read and understand maps.
- Ability to pass state skill test, state written test, department of transportation physical and MDE Basic Training Program.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and community.
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form.
- Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- While performing duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in temperatures above 100 and below 32 and will occasionally walk on slippery surfaces.
- Must be able to meet deadlines with severe time constraints and interact with public and other workers.
- Regularly works near moving mechanical bus and equipment.
- May frequently work with toxic or caustic chemicals such as petroleum products. Degreasers, gases, fumes and sprays.
- Occasionally works in outside weather conditions and is occasionally exposed to fumes and airborne particles.
- Has direct responsibility for the safety and well-being of others.
- The noise level in the work environment is frequently loud to where you have to raise your voice to be heard.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Twelve months. Other contract terms and salary to be established by the Board.
