Position: Design Engineer

BASIC FUNCTION

This position designs and develops layouts for mechanical systems. Works with the CAD Modeler to transform initial rough product designs using CAD into working documents. Reviews engineering drawings and designs to ensure adherence to established specifications and standards. The position is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining pump products, systems, and auxiliary equipment. Familiar with a variety of the field's concepts, practices, and procedures. The position relies on experience and judgment to plan, predict, analyze, and evaluate systems and components as well as be able to accomplish goals. Performs a variety of tasks. A certain degree of creativity and latitude is expected. The position requires the ability to be flexible and coordinate multiple tasks simultaneously.

NATURE & SCOPE:

The Design Engineer will facilitate effective product designs which are aligned with the objectives of the organization. He/she prepares layout drawings and design of technical project data. He/she is responsible for the complete design and documentation packaging of routine to complex mechanical systems including centrifugal pumps, bearing frames, couplings, machinery guards, and structural components. He/she performs calculations and verifies specifications, and determines unspecified tolerances and dimensions to establish requirements for capacities, materials, performance, construction, type, etc. He/she will provide design support for the Product Engineer(s) to develop and maintain a product/product family.

In this role, the Design Engineer is responsible for several items as they relate to the strategic mission of the organization.
  • Accurate design and drafting of complex component detail drawings, assembly drawings, and technical documentation.
  • Sustain existing products by staying informed of issues in the field and with manufacturing/suppliers to recognize problems early and help correct them.
  • Control the cost of product development, sustainment, and enhancement efforts.
  • Assure us the latest technology is properly used throughout the department.
  • Support test for the evaluation of prototypes and validation of products.
  • Strong ability to communicate (verbal and written) throughout the organization and interface with all functional departments (e.g.: Sales, Manufacturing, etc.).
  • Judge systems and components with respect to their relation to the safety of people.
  • Assure department compliance with the quality system.
  • Plan assignments aligned with the overall schedule and objectives of the department. Consult management regarding constraints and capacity issues.

QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE:

• A bachelor's degree in a related engineering/design field. 2+ years of design experience, preferably with rotating equipment or industrial machinery.

• Mechanical design/analysis, drafting technology, manufacturing technology, GD&T, test/validate methods, and quality programs.

• Computer skills:

• MS Word and MS Excel.

• Experience with SolidWorks is required.

• A knowledge of PDM-Works and AutoCAD is preferable.

• Must have good verbal, written, and interpersonal skills with the ability to work independently in a professional capacity.
