The mechanical engineer, a member of the Facilities Engineering Group, provides designs, analyses, project management and inspections and condition assessments. Duties include mechanical designs for minor renovations and HVAC projects including power and control systems. Design to include calculations, code analysis, preparation of sketches/ drawings, etc. This position will also be responsible for managing various design and construction projects as assigned along with assisting with facilities inspections and condition assessment. Thorough understanding of design criteria such as American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning (ASHRAE), National Electrical Code (NEC), and other engineering standards and building codes.
Possess strong communication skills, both verbal and written, with all University stakeholders.
Proficient in Microsoft Office with ability to maintain databases as required. Demonstrated ability to prepare mechanical designs including engineering calculations and preparation of plans and specifications.
Demonstrated ability to use Computer Aided Design software such as AutoCAD and/or prepares schematic, preliminary, and work drawings for the construction, renovation and replacement of building and/ or utility systems.
Responsible for managing all aspects of the project to include project planning, design and construction to ensure it meets expected cost and schedule requirements. Conducts periodic inspections of work in progress and advises construction supervisors and contractors on interpretation of plans and specifications. Inspects materials, workmanship, and architectural, mechanical and electrical installations for conformance to plans and specifications. Ensure coordination with ODU customers and building occupants to keep all interested parties informed of the project's scope, schedule and impact on campus operations.
Reports to work as directed during emergency closings.
