Berkeley Lab is hiring a Engineering Mechanical Technician Level 2 for the Superconducting magnet development program (SMP). This role involves performing routine technical support under supervision, using basic mechanical and electro-mechanical knowledge, tools and equipment. The technician will work closely with the SMP magnet assembly team. This position offers a chance to contribute to advanced scientific research and technology development in large superconducting magnets utilized in large particle accelerators like the Large Hadron Collider, and the Advanced Light Source.

What You Will Do:
  • Handle routine technical tasks such as, assembling, fabricating, installing, measuring, testing, inspecting, maintaining, troubleshooting, and modifying scientific and research equipment, in particular with large superconducting magnets, magnet coils, and large mechanical structures.
  • Learn to work with various materials and assembly processes related to magnets.
  • Follow written procedures for routine tasks and seek guidance for new assignments.
  • Apply technical skills and laboratory standards to complete tasks, with occasional need for deviation from standard practices.
  • Read and interpret mechanical drawings, schematics, and work instructions.
  • Use measuring tools (e.g., calipers, torque wrenches) and hand, power, and machine tools.
  • Use a computer for email, reporting work progress, and scheduling.


Additional Responsibilities as Needed:
  • Adjusting, calibrating and maintaining equipment for peak performance.
  • Identify common engineering materials and components.


What is Required:
  • 2-4 years of demonstrated experience in mechanical or electromechanical technology, with the ability to follow written and verbal instructions accurately.
  • Experience in large-scale, detailed assembly work, following strict procedures and maintaining a high level of precision with the highest level of attention to detail.
  • Significant experience in fabrication, assembly, machining, installation, operation, testing, inspection, maintenance, and troubleshooting of mechanical devices.
  • Moderate computer skills.
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • The ability to climb stairs and ladders, work up to 40 feet above the ground, and have the ability to lift and carry 50 pounds. Occasionally work in crumpled or confined spaces. Occasionally reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.


Desired Qualifications:
  • AA degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology or equivalent industry/military training.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, sketches, parts lists, and assembly diagrams and procedures.
  • Competence in identifying mechanical parts, including sizes, ratings, tolerances, finishes, and materials.
  • Knowledge of engineering processes, procedures, and tools.


Notes:
  • This is a full-time career appointment, non-exempt (hourly paid) from overtime pay.
  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.
  • Salary will be determined based on range by collective bargaining agreement.
  • The hourly range for Mechanical Technician Level 2 position is $33.42 - $48.47. The hourly rate for this position is based upon the candidate's qualifications/relevant experience.
