For more than 118 years, Backus Hospital has been the primary source of healthcare services for much of Eastern Connecticut. We are home to the only trauma center in New London and Windham counties, and are the only area hospital with LIFE STAR helicopter services. We deliver and coordinate a continuum of high-quality healthcare with the goal of improving the health of our communities.

JOB SUMMARY
Performs the social work functions of bio-psycho-social assessment, short term crisis intervention, supportive counseling and resource referral. Provides intervention to assist patients/families to improve social and economic difficulties that may interfere with health and wellness. Facilitates discharge planning across the continuum of care.

Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor's degree in Social Work or related human services field required. Masters in Social Work preferred
Experience: Previous social work or human services experience required. Two (2) to Three (3) years of health care experience preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Ability to read and understand oral and written instructions, and effectively communicate information. Basic computer skills (including opening/reading email, basic internet use).

Excellent interpersonal skills necessary to communicate with departments, employees, physicians and managers. Ability to relate to people with diverse educational and cultural backgrounds. Must be organized, flexible and a team player. Ability to manage time and meet deadlines in a hectic work environment. Working knowledge of windows based software (including word processing, database and spreadsheet) for occasional performance of duties.

PROBLEM SOLVING AND DECISION MAKING
Requires the ability to take the appropriate action in response to changes, circumstances or problems. Requires high level of analytical ability in order to gather and interpret information from various sources. Ability to formulate and implement a viable plan for intervention.
