MENTAL HEALTH COORDINATOR/SCHOOL SOCIAL WORKER JOB DESCRIPTION

Position Title - Mental Health Coordinator/School Social Worker

Reports to - Superintendent, Special Education Coordinator, and Principals

Required Education and Experience -
The MHSC must have the following qualification:
• A bachelor's degree in social work,
• Satisfy ALSDE qualifications for a school counselor,
• Satisfy ALSDE qualifications for a school nurse,
• Previous professional mental health experience or have been licensed in a mental health occupation including, but not limited to, licensure as a licensed professional counselor (LPC) or marriage and family therapist (MFT), or
• Other qualifications as determined by the Alabama Department of Mental Health (ADMH) and the
ALSDE.

The MHSC should also possess the following qualifications:
• A positive attitude and effective communication skills,
• Strong organizational skills, and
• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to connect with others.

Duties/Responsibilities -
The MHSC will work with students, families, teachers, school counselors, school nurses, school administrators, and district administrators to identity and address the social/emotional mental health and wellness needs of students through collaboration with school-based community mental health and wellness needs of students through collaboration with school-based and community mental health professionals through the following essential functions:

• Serve as the direct contact person between the SCSD and its community-based mental health service providers while adhering to FERPA and HIPPA guidelines.
• Facilitate universal mental health screenings throughout the SCSD and the coordinate the logistics of these screenings with the building principals.
• Coordinate progress monitoring for students receiving services, analyze data, and deliver recommendations for improvement.
• Provide students, families, community members, and school personnel with specific training and professional development around mental health related topics.
• Partner with community-based mental health providers to maximize therapist availability, coordinate schedules, and seek additional partners or therapists when needed.

Duties/Responsibilities (continued) -
• Develop reports for administrative and pupil services teams that provide information related to the grant's objectives and recommendations for program improvement.
• Work with the Director or Special Education to seek additional funding sources for mental health services.
• Attend professional development opportunities related to mental health and other relevant trainings.
• . Coordinates, organizes, and directs services and activities (e.g. attendance for key stakeholder meetings, Initiative activities with other countywide or region-wide efforts, etc.) for the purpose of providing on-going leadership, coaching, mentoring, training, and technical assistance with respect to Mental Health initiatives.
• Coordinates prevention activities with SCSD and community teams focused on engagement and empowerment of students and families.
• Strong work ethic including regular, punctual attendance
• Appropriate public relation skills
• Good oral and written communication skills
• Ability to work harmoniously with fellow employees

Evaluation -
Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board policy on evaluation of personnel and will be conducted by the Superintendent.

Salary: Per Salary Schedule Dependent on degree and public school experience Special programs as per individual budget.

Contract: 187 days unless otherwise indicated
