* Typical tasks like setting up and running fabrication jobs on manual or CNC[1] lathes, mills Or Additive manufacturing equipment. Including orientating and nesting 3D files fabrication.

* Inspecting piece parts using CMM[2] or other precise inspection equipment are providing process improvement biased on results.

* Running and maintaining additive manufacturing equipment like 3D polymer or metallic printers.

* Developing and executing schedules for work-cell operations.

* Working with both industry standard and exotic raw materials that require proficiency in material selection and characteristics in order to perform setup and fabrication job functions.

* Skills in reading and providing feedback on engineering documentation such as drawings utilizing GD&T[3], electronic schematics, and interface control documents.

Like all role guidelines, these are not absolute requirements, and it is not expected that an individual exactly matches all attributes of a specific subfamily category. It is also expected that some individuals may be competent across multiple areas or would like to continue their career development in other job categories within this subfamily or within another subfamily underneath the overall Manufacturing job family. Thus, managers should see these as guidelines and adapt these according to needs of their roles and appropriate to overall guidelines for levels.

You are an expert in the use of at least 1 or proficient in multiple specialized manufacturing equipment such as but not limited to manual and CNC lathes/mills, welding machines, CMM/Romer Arm inspection equipment, or 3D printers. You communicate with engineers, peers and other stakeholders using technical language and provide both design and process feedback (DfM[3], DfA[4], CNC programs, weld schedules, etc) on your assigned products. You are proficient in reading and interpreting engineering documents like drawings using GD&T, schematics, or interface documents. demonstrate industry best practices and data to make technical decisions to solve common problems and may be involved in straightforward technical decision making. You setup and run specialized manufacturing equipment to fabricate complex products. You perform first article fabrications of products from engineering drawings, models, or industry specifications. You are proficient in using industry standard raw materials like aluminium alloys, steels, polymers, carbon fiber, laser sintered materials and are proficient with specialty materials applicable to your job functions (e.g., various steel heat treated alloy usages, titanium and nickel-based alloys, appropriate additive manufacturing materials for different jobs, composite materials, etc). You are an expert in applicable machine specific software for role (CAD/CAM software, 3D printing software, precision inspection CMM software, etc). You execute work independently (but will seek guidance, when needed) and may also support development articles with more limited engineering/process definition. You assist in the training of peers on equipment you are proficient in and may assist in setup or troubleshooting with less experienced peers.

[2] A Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) is a piece of equipment that measures the geometries of physical objects. CMMs using a probing system to detect discreet points on the surfaces of objects.

[3] Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) is a system for defining and communicating engineering tolerances and relationships. It uses a symbolic language on engineering drawings and computer-generated three-dimensional solid models that explicitly describe nominal geometry and its allowable variation.

[3] Design for Manufacturing (DFM) is the process of designing parts, components or products for ease of manufacturing with an end goal of making a better product at a lower cost.

[4] Design for Assembly (DfA) revolves around simplifying the product structure, focusing on: reducing the number of required product parts; increasing ease of assembly by using keyed parts or components that can only go together in a certain orientation; and ensuring ease of handling during assembly by measuring part size, weight, ease of dispensing, fragility, and flexibility.[1] Computer numerical control (CNC) is a method for automating control of machine tools through the use of software embedded in a microcomputer attached to the tool. It is commonly used in manufacturing for machining metal and plastic parts.
