Introduction

The Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs (WDVA) currently has an opening for a Military Funeral Honors Coordinator at the Southern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery (SWVMC).

The SWVMC is situated on state-owned farmland at the Southern Wisconsin Center, located near Union Grove, WI and provides a final resting place for eligible veterans, spouses, and dependents. Position Summary

This position serves as a statewide coordinator for military funeral honors services and provides military funeral honors as part of a specialized team. This includes coordinating requests for Military Funeral Honors (MFH) support from veterans' families, funeral directors, veterans' organizations, or military Casualty Assistance Centers (CACs). This position also coordinates support between MFH teams and maintains the appropriate documentation concerning honors supported.

This position also functions as a MFH team member or leader when required. Other duties include providing direction and training to veteran service organizations assisting with funeral honors.

Salary Information

The starting pay rate for this position is between $23.00 - $26.00 an hour. Current state employees' pay will be based on the provisions in the State of Wisconsin Compensation Plan. This classification is in Pay Schedule 07, Pay Range 04. A twelve-month probationary period will be required.

Job Details

It's required that a person with military experience (i.e., any branch of the military service including National Guard, Reserves and Coast Guard) or any veteran with other than a dishonorable discharge be appointed to this position as required in Title 10, United States Code, Section 772 and the specific regulations of the individual armed forces that allow only members and former members of the armed forces to wear the military uniform.

WDVA will conduct criminal background checks prior to an offer of hire. Due to the nature of the position, it is required that any person serving in this position have no unpardoned adult felony convictions or convictions for a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence.

This position involves acting as a casket pall bearer, which includes lifting, carrying, and setting down up to 50 pounds.

Occasional travel in Wisconsin with some non-standard work hours will be required.

Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States (i.e., a citizen or national of the U.S., a lawful permanent resident, an alien authorized to work in the U.S. without WDVA sponsorship) at the time of application.

Qualifications

Minimally qualified applicants will have:
  • Experience assisting internal and external customers, and/or stakeholders with questions by utilizing a variety of communication methods (e.g., phone, email, fax, in person, etc.)

  • Training or experience utilizing computer programs for data entry (e.g., databases, tracking software, Microsoft Access, Excel, Word or comparable)
Well qualified candidates will also have experience:
  • Performing military ceremonies (e.g., flag folding, change of command, color guard, rifle volleys, etc.)
