Job Duties

The VDOE Office of Special Education Program Improvement is seeking qualified individuals to support activities that advance student learning and academic achievement of children with disabilities as described in the Department of Education's Strategic Plan and Special Education Annual Performance Plan and Performance Report, increase the Department's capacity to provide leadership and assistance to school divisions in providing special education programs and services; and provide highly complex managerial, technical, and analytical services to facilitate effective monitoring activities to ensure compliance with federal and state special education requirements and improved outcomes for children with disabilities.

Minimum Qualifications

• Considerable knowledge of federal and state regulations concerning students with disabilities, including the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, administration and supervision of special education programs; state and local government policies, procedures, and organizational structures; and curriculum and effective instructional practices.
• Skills in technical writing, coordinating, leading teams, analyzing and interpreting data, and presenting technical and complex information to various audiences. Skills in word processing and presentation software.
• Ability to identify and analyze complex problems related to special education and related services; to identify deficiencies in program operation and strategies to make corrections and effect positive change; to manage multiple assignments with critical deadlines; and work collaboratively in a team environment.

Additional Considerations

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience. An advanced degree in special education, school administration, or related field preferred.
