Summary
The Functional MRI Laboratory is dedicated to supporting research on the structures and functions of the brain that underlie cognitive and affective processes, and research on functional MRI and associated research tools. The Laboratory's mission is to maintain an environment that will enhance the excellence of research using fMRI and associated technologies by providing a well-equipped physical facility and appropriate intellectual support services for investigators.
This position is for a MRI technologist at the Functional MRI Laboratory, a research unit of the Medical School?s Radiology Department. The lab is available to faculty across the university on a fee-for-service basis. Research studies at the lab have subject populations that include both pediatric and adult participants.

Responsibilities*
The functional MRI Technologist will be responsible for operating the MRI scanner while strictly adhering to protocols set by the Lead Technologist and the Principal Investigator for the study being performed. This job will be set in a research environment, so attention to detail, being able to accurately perform scans, and ability to focus while dealing with interruptions is a must. Strong computer skills are also desired as this individual will help troubleshoot issues with input devices and presentation computers; data management and transfer will also be performed. Subject populations will include both pediatric and adult participants.
This position will operate under limited supervision of the Lead Technologist and the Technical Director. Self-motivation along with a strong sense of personal responsibility and decision-making skills will be needed. There will be a great emphasis on safety knowledge, as well as the ability to scan independently.
The selected individual will also aid in maintaining research logs and records and will need to occasionally alert GE and leadership regarding repairs and maintenance of the scanner and ancillary equipment.
Key areas of responsibility include:
Accurate and efficient scanning throughput of subjects.
Ensure all expected images and data from the scan are acquired, processed, and archived on the server accurately.
Assist the Technical Director and Lead Technologist to build preventative maintenance time into the schedule and immediately notifying the Technical Director and Lead Technologist when equipment or peripherals indicate need for repairs. Also, responsible to coordinate repairs with vendor personnel, to ensure repairs are completed in a timely manner.
May assist with training new Temporary Scanning Staff and coordinate additions, improvements, or revisions to the training program with the Technical Director and Lead Technologist.
Work with the Technical Director and Lead Technologist to maintain and promote a safe workplace. Also, actively provide suggestions for safety improvements as opportunities arise.
Provide assistance to graduate students and post-docs to set-up the MRI machine for their scans, navigate the computer interface, and scan phantoms.
Ensure each subject scan is accompanied, without exception, by a voluntarily approved subject consent form and safety screening form and review these carefully to confirm that they are current and accurate for the study being performed. Also, accurately log each scan performed to ensure accurate billing and teach others to accurately log scans, including temporary staff and students.
Understand the Laboratory's scanning policies, including logging procedures, billing procedures, how to submit a proposal, subject screening procedures, and consent form procedures and effectively communicate these policies to students and researchers seeking to use the Laboratory's scans resources.

Required Qualifications*
- CPR/BLS Certified
- MRI technologist training with an accredited school, or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Registration by American Registry of Radiologic Technologists ( ARRT ) or American Registry of Magnetic
- Resonance Imaging Technologist ( ARMRIT ) is necessary.
- Reasonable experience in diagnostic radiography is necessary.
- At least one year of experience operating an MRI scanner
- Reliable transportation
- Outstanding attendance record at previous locations of employment
- Knowledgeable about the risks of MRI and the ability to effectively communicate these risks
- Must be able to move up to 30 lbs, be able to sit for long periods of time, and transport patients on a stretcher if needed
- Strong computer skills
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Able to interpret, communicate, and enforce policies effectively
- Strong multi-tasking skills and the ability to cope with interruptions
- Personality that is thoughtful, personable, caring, patient, and respectful of differences
Desired Qualifications*
- Associate's or Bachelor?s degree preferred
- Three years of experience operating an MRI scanner
- Experience scanning pediatric subjects
- Experience using a Linux operating system
- Experience working in a research setting or performing functional MRI
- Knowledge of University of Michigan human subjects research policies and procedures
- Experience using GE scanners and software
