GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT: the nature and level of work performed.

Under direct supervision of the Sr. Administrative Director, and faculty supported by the Advanced Practice Provider (APP) role, and in accordance with the rules and regulations of Massachusetts governing APP practices, the APP will be responsible for the evaluation and management of outpatients within the MGH Department of Urology. The APP efforts will include taking of patient histories, physical examinations, performing and arranging for diagnostic procedures, coordinating consultations, implementing treatment plans, communicating with referring physicians and supporting patient and family needs and education.

The primary function of the APP role is to provide direct patient care for outpatients of the Department of Urology in a timely and high-quality manner in collaboration with physicians, nurses and the other members of a multidisciplinary care team.

PRINCIAPPL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

General Clinical:

• Manages the care of patients, in collaboration with urology surgeons, requiring treatment for urological signs, symptoms, diseases and disorders. Provides care for both new and follow-up patients.

• Performs physical examinations, records patient histories, arranges for diagnostic studies, and prescribes treatment and medications appropriately utilizing clinical guidelines as a basis for actions.

• Performs specialized procedures particular to the select population mutually agreed upon with collaborating physician.

• Utilizes advanced clinical knowledge to identify, prevent or solve complex and/or recurring patient care problems.

• Performs medically delegated aspects of patient care per scope of practice.

• Recommends referral to physician consultants as necessary.

• Follows and manages patients (in collaboration with the MD) enhancing continuity of care.

• Works closely with physician and clinical leadership to create and update clinical pathways and treatment algorithms.

• Communicates effectively with patients, families, and other healthcare providers.

• Serves as a resource to both clinical and administrative personnel in area(s) of expertise.

• Performs medically delegated aspects of patient care per scope of practice.

• Maintains and practices in accord with practitioner guidelines per state and hospital regulations.

• Other duties as assigned.

Initial Specific Clinical Duties:

• Initial duties will include supporting the genitourinary oncology practice, however based on patient needs at any time may also include supporting general urology and other sub-specialized practices, including but not limited to kidney stones, men's health, women's health, BPH, male infertility, and urinary dysfunction.

• Post surgical support and care of genitourinary oncology patients - independent of or in conjunction with urology faculty.

Education/Teaching:

• Serves as a resource to staff in area(s) of expertise.

• Develops patient education programs within area of expertise in collaboration with other urology personnel.

• Other duties as assigned.

Performance Improvement:

• Monitors patient outcomes in accordance with defined standards of patient care.

• Works with the multidisciplinary team to identify system-wide factors contributing to undesirable outcomes, such as complications, increased length of stay and overutilization of services.

• Facilitates patient movement through the system and efficient use of resources through interdepartmental collaboration.

• Evaluates own practice and program effectiveness.

• Identifies pertinent nursing and health delivery problems for investigation.

Continuing Education/Professional Growth:

• Responsible for own professional growth and maintenance of required credential

• Maintains the standards and education requirements specific to the position and licensure.

• Identifies own learning needs and goals.

• Maintains and updates clinical knowledge and skills based on current health care practice/research.

• Maintains membership in relevant professional associations.

• Completes the 100 hours of continuing medical education necessary during each 2-year period of employment.

• Attends internal and external education meetings and reads appropriate professional journals in order to maintain and enhance skills and clinical competence. Is encouraged to advance his/her medical and technical skills as appropriate to deliver optimum patient care.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

• A Master's degree is required; must be a graduate of an accredited American Medical Association-approved Physician Assistant training program and possess Physician Assistant certification.

• A current license to practice as a Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner in the state of Massachusetts is required

• APP must demonstrate continued competence by passing a recertification exam.

• Previous related clinical experience or clinical work experience in a surgical practice preferred but new graduates will be considered.
