Job Description

Purpose:

Under the direction of the Division Director and Director of Psychiatric Nursing and in collaboration with the designated physician, the Associate Nurse Practitioner carries out protocols identified for the mental health treatment of adolescent, adult, and geriatric designated patients reflecting accepted standards of medical and nursing practice commensurate with the candidate's training and certification. These protocols will include provisions for the Collaborative Care Model of treatment for anxiety and depression, provisions for Case Management, including diagnosis, treatment, and appropriate record keeping, as well as others determined jointly to be appropriate and outlined in the delineation of privileges.

Specific Duties and Responsibilties:

The Nurse Practitioner is charged with and responsible for:
  1. Demonstrates advanced knowledge of psychopathology and addiction in assessing patients/families in need of treatment, including addiction assessment, mental status examination and diagnostic evaluation.
  2. Develops an individualized treatment plan after collecting and reviewing psychosocial data, medical history, nursing assessment and other pertinent information.
  3. Demonstrates knowledge of services available both within the hospital and in outside agencies in developing a discharge plan and creates working relationships with community agencies.
  4. Demonstrates advanced knowledge of psychopharmacology as it pertains to the patient population being treated and writes prescriptions.
  5. Demonstrates crisis intervention techniques including verbal de-escalation, use of restraint and constant observation, PRN psychotropic medication.
  6. Counsels patients and families using advanced psychotherapeutic techniques in both individual and group modalities. Initiates and participates in studies/research related to Nurse Practitioner services and addiction medical care of specific treatment population.
  7. Provides clinical and didactic instruct ion to professional staff, students, and community groups, and conducts in-service educational programs.
  8. Provides patient/family education in areas of psychopathology, compliance with aftercare and medication,
  9. Services offered for addiction recovery both by the hospital and outside agencies.
  10. Integrates nursing and medical concepts in planning care for medically complicated psychiatric patients. Evaluates patients' levels of acuity and changes the treatment approach as necessary.
  11. Recognizes the effect of one's own belief system, personal feelings, and prior experience on the nurse practitioner-patient relationship and seeks supervision, as needed.
  12. Identifies cases with complicated treatment issues and collaborates with designated physicians on a regular basis and as needed.
  13. Collaborates with multidisciplinary treatment team to coordinate and implement the treatment and discharge plans, evaluating and modifying these as necessary.
  14. Tolerates dysfunctional and complex behavior of patients, families, and visitors by interacting in a non-judgmental way to help solve problems.
  15. Communicates the hospital mission to patients and families. Initiates and participates in PI and QI activities
  16. Records and maintains a system of patient progress notes to plan program management and therapy appropriate to patient's needs.
  17. Provides teaching, guidance, and direction to nursing personnel in rendering health care and assists in directing and coordinating nursing activities.
  18. Participates in the outpatient collaborative care model for treatment of anxiety and depression as per assignment.
  19. Response to and complete e-consults for Behavioral Health requested by Ambulatory Care and Outpatient sub-specialties, as per assignment.


Minimum Qualifications
1. A valid New York State license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse issued by the New York State Department of Education (NYSED); and
2. Current certificate as a Nurse Practitioner issued by the NYSED; and
3. Holds, or obtains through facility orientation, a valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA).
