Job Summary

12 East Mott is a 32-bed pediatric medical-surgical unit, with an age range from infant to young adult. The primary services include GI, pulmonary, pediatric surgery, OTO, plastics, general pediatrics, and neonate graduates.

Responsibilities*
  • To assist the department director in planning and management of the unit and the provision of patient care.
  • To provide leadership in the practice of nursing, emphasizing quality patient care, education, and research.
  • To assist in coordinating between management and patient care activities consistent with the University of Michigan Hospital and Health Center mission and goal statements.
  • Reports directly to the Clinical Nursing Director.
  • Collaborative/consultative relationship with other health professionals and administrative personnel.

Responsibilities include:
Personnel Management:
  • Plan, assign and supervise the work of nursing and support staff.
  • Participate in interviewing, selecting and orienting nursing and support staff.
  • Participate in the counseling, coaching, discipline, and evaluation of unit staff.
  • Participate in the development, implementation, and revision of individual performance plans.
  • Facilitate open channels of communication with managers, peers, staff, and physicians.
  • Coach and mentor Charge Nurses, Staff Nurses, and assistive personnel to standards and expectations.

Management of Clinical Area:
  • Participate in the development and implementation of unit or area goals and objectives.
  • Perform regular regulatory readiness audits to assure compliance with The Joint Commission standards.
  • Identify and plan for staffing consistent with the needs of the patient population and budgetary requirements.
  • Participate in planning and problem solving of daily unit/area operations, priorities of patient services, and urgent and emergent care.
  • Interpret and implement the Hospital and University policies and procedures and the standards of regulatory agencies.
  • Participate in the monitoring of Department payroll and commodity expenditures.
  • Provide input into the payroll and commodity budget planning process.
  • Coordinate performance evaluation activities for unit staff as delegated by the Clinical Nursing Director.
  • Participate in hiring activities of unit staff, conducting personnel interviews, reference checks, and the coordination of onboarding.
  • Participate in developing of unit/area policy/procedure and standards of Nursing Care. Anticipate and respond to patient/family issues and concerns.
  • Develop schedule that optimizes resources to meet the needs of the unit and patient care.
  • Approve holiday and PTO requests as outlined by bargained-for agreement or other unit policies.

Quality Assurance and Research:
  • Participate in planning, coordinating, and evaluating unit quality improvement activities.
  • Promote evidence-based practice and integration of best practices.
  • Promote staff involvement in clinical research, as applicable.
  • Assure and maintain compliance with regulatory standards.

Required Qualifications*

Required Educational Requirements:

Applicant must meet one of the following:
* Bachelors of Science in Nursing OR
* Associates degree or diploma in Nursing and a Masters degree in Nursing.
  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan.
  • Minimum five (5) years RN experience.
  • Minimum two (2) years recent (within the last 5 years) RN experience in Pediatrics.
  • Completion of a Nurse Leadership certification within two (2) years of accepting this position or when eligible to certify, whichever comes first. Certification is expected to be maintained while in this leadership role. Examples include Certified Nurse Manager and Leader (CNML) or, Nurse Executive (NE-BC). Certifications must be recognized by the Magnet Recognition Program? and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC.) See full list here .
  • Evidence of demonstrated or potential leadership ability including charge nurse, team leader or other management experience.

  • Previous supervisory experience.
  • Knowledge of the University of Michigan Hospitals and Health Centers policies and practices.
  • Masters prepared.
  • Consultative and teaching skills.
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and problem solving skills.
  • Evidence of ability to assess, interpret and analyze clinical information independently and collaboratively.
  • Demonstrate ability to work effectively with administrators, physicians, peers and subordinates.

Hours: 40 hours per week
Shift: Day shift, Mon-Fri, flexibility required
