Job Description

Under direct supervision, the Operating Engineer will assist with monitoring and inspecting equipment. Assist with operating the steam and chilled water plant, and with guidance from the supervisor, adjusts and controls steam and chilled water, and performs water tests and analysis.

Duties:
  • Assists with monitoring and inspecting equipment to detect leaks or malfunctions to ensure the equipment is operating efficiently and safely
  • With guidance from the supervisor, discusses the type of maintenance needed and performs routine maintenance
  • Assists with the operation of the steam and chilled water plant generation equipment including boilers, chillers, and cooling towers
  • Assists with adjustments and controls of the generation of steam and chilled water to ensure maximum efficiency of plant operations
  • Assists with reading gauges, meters, and charts to ensure the boilers are operating properly
  • May test boiler water quality and discusses with supervisor any corrective actions that should be taken such as mixing and adding chemicals to prevent corrosion and harmful deposits
  • May assist with analyzing problems and receive directives from the supervisor of any appropriate action to be taken
  • Assists with maintaining logs of operation, maintenance, and safety activities, including but not limited to test results, instrument readings, and details of equipment malfunctions and maintenance work
  • Assists with keeping the plant operational when the University is closed and in case of steam and chill plant emergencies
  • Uses hand tools, power tools, precision measuring, and testing instruments
  • Reads and interprets electrical, mechanical, and civil design drawings
  • Performs various duties as needed to successfully fulfill the functions of the position or any site support position to include assisting any skilled trade


Job Requirements

Education: High School diploma or GED.

Preferred:

  • 6 months of steam and chilled water plant operation or related industrial plant operation experience
  • Class II State of Oklahoma Boilers License


Certifications:
  • Valid Oklahoma Driver's License in order to drive University vehicles or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire date

Skills:
  • Basic knowledge of water analysis and chemical treatments
  • Basic knowledge of safe operating procedures
  • Detail-oriented when watching gauges and other indicators to ensure equipment is working properly
  • Ability to give full attention and understand written and verbal instructions
  • Ability to use hand and power tools, control panels, and switches

Working Conditions:
  • Physical: Standing and walking for prolonged periods. Ability to grasp, reach, twist, bend and kneel. Ability to lift up to 75 lbs. unassisted.
  • Environmental: Works in a power plant environment and with large machinery and possible exposure to hazardous conditions. Exposure to steam, electricity-high voltage, hazardous chemicals, extreme cold and heat, wet, humid, and noisy environments. When required, must wear appropriate safety equipment.
