Job Summary:

OLAR provides routine and specialized care for a wide variety of species of large and small laboratory animals, which are used by scientists for biomedical research and education in the Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy and Nursing at the University of Colorado Denver | Anschutz Medical Campus. This position ensures appropriate sanitation of the general use areas, laboratory procedure space, dock and hallways in a secure vivarium as well as the cage wash areas. This position will be responsible for stocking and inventory control of personal protective equipment, general use supplies, laundry, and cleaning supplies. This position will ensure appropriate trash removal from the facilities. This position will be responsible for the removal, sorting, weighing, and preparation of carcasses for pick up by the appropriate disposal vendor. This position is responsible for washing and providing sterile caging for the facility. This position will be responsible for monitoring the facilities' pest control program and keeping logs. This position may procure animal feed, bedding, and supplies from appropriate support areas and transports to required sites and may operate a university vehicle. Finally, this position will be responsible for performing cage wash operations.

Key Responsibilities:

As an Operations Technician Specialist, they are able to adequately learn various job duties throughout all OLAR run animal facilities (RC-1, R2, PR2, BDC, and DT). They are required to transport caging and equipment between OLAR and off-site facilities utilizing a department vehicle. They are cross-trained in other job duties as needed, such as: operation of cage wash facilities/equipment, materials handler, and general labor responsibilities. They are expected to be able to manage time between facilities, including adjusting assignments with Operations IIs and supervisors, as needed. When little or no work is assigned, they are able to communicate with supervisors/managers and work with leaders in the respective facilities to assist others or complete projects. They are expected to communicate facility problems/concerns to lead and supervisor so that any needed facility support/needs/corrections are immediately addressed.

This Operations Technician Specialist position is a full-time position that will perform a variety of duties to include but not limited to:

  • Maintains and cleans facility procedure rooms, docks, laundry room, and corridors.
  • Maintains appropriate levels of supplies in multiple areas.
  • Ensures that waste containers are emptied when full and placed in the appropriate waste stream.
  • Ensures that facility generated laundry is washed, dried, folded, and delivered to the appropriate locations.
  • Performs upkeep of disinfection stations and disinfection bottles.
  • Performs collections from laboratory areas of animal carcasses.
  • Removes all animal carcasses from refrigerators/freezers and ensures that they are sent to the appropriate waste stream. In addition, must thaw and clean carcass freezers on a scheduled time period.
  • Must stack feed bags on pallets and transport them to appropriate locations.
  • Ensures supplies and equipment are properly received, sorted, de-conned, and delivered to the appropriate location .
  • Provides sanitation by fogging or foaming of rooms, corridors, hallways, walls, and doors within the facility.
  • Works with coworkers for large facility projects, including; decontamination, sanitation, equipment adjustments, and equipment assembly.
  • This position oversees the facilities' pest control program and keeps accurate records and documentation of that program.
  • This position uses a floor scrubber along with other cleaning equipment and tools to include pallet jack, drum dolly, dip tank, pressure washer, Strahman hoses, foamer and dolly (two-wheeler).
  • Evaluates equipment to determine if equipment can be repaired and makes requests for parts orders
  • Must be able to repair/maintain the floor scrubber, general equipment repair, replacement of wheels and bent shelves, and fixing watering valves/Lixits
  • Assembles large equipment such as carts, racks, cabinets, and chairs. Installs utensil holders, hand soap dispensers, shelving, hooks, and other installation projects
  • Operate multiple large steam sterilizers, rack washers, index washers, robotic equipment, vacuum disposal and bedding dispensers.
  • Must physically load and unload caging on cage wash conveyor belts.
  • Perform work that is mechanical and physical in nature and frequently stand, walk, squat, push, and pull material.
  • Perform basic equipment repairs and preventive maintenance on material handling carts and various housing racks.
  • Assemble and tear down sterile and non-sterile animal cages and equipment.
  • Check and fill the animal bedding dispenser on the loading dock.
  • Handle and dispose of soiled animal bedding and animal waste from animal cages.
  • Provide clean cages and bins for aquatic animal species.
  • Prepare enrichment for various species.
  • Handle hazardous chemicals, animal waste, infectious materials, animal blood or bodily materials.
  • Must wear hearing protection, eye protection, and respiratory for specific tasks assigned.
  • Performs other duties, as assigned.

Anticipated Pay Range:

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as HIRING RANGE $42,800 -$43,000.
