Job Duties

What Drives You? The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is excited to announce an opportunity to serve as a member of the Christiansburg Bridge Crew within the Salem District Structure & Bridge Team to repair, maintain and replace bridges and structures in accordance with established safety standards, VDOT specifications and procedures, and equipment operation standards.
We are looking for individuals with skills in carpentry, concrete forming and finishing, welding, and equipment operation (e.g. dump truck, loader, backhoe) and the ability to perform manual labor.

As a member of the bridge maintenance team, you will:
• respond to emergency roadway and severe weather events to prepare and operate equipment for snow and ice removal and other types of hazardous road conditions
• operate light to medium-duty equipment to perform bridge maintenance and construction related tasks
• form footers, abutments, wing walls, and place and finish concrete
• erect steel beam structures, install timber and concrete bridge decks
• complete pre-trip inspections, demonstrate proper jobsite protection techniques

The current vacancy is located at the Christiansburg location.

Position requires physically demanding labor over, in, and around water from boats and scaffolding at various heights and in harsh weather conditions.

VDOT is an emergency response agency, and this position is key to fulfilling this agency requirement, and this position will be called upon to work outside of normal work hours during emergency operations such as inclement weather, flooding, and/or traffic incidents.

Minimum Qualifications

• knowledge of highway and bridge maintenance methods, equipment, materials, and safety practices
• experience in carpentry, concrete forming and finishing, and welding
• able to perform heavy manual labor, including frequently lifting up to 50 lbs
• skill using and maintaining light to medium duty equipment, hand and power tools
• able to work at heights, over and in water, in heavy traffic and under adverse conditions
• able to perform mathematical calculations to measure and lay out constructed elements on bridges and culverts
• valid CDL and DOT medical card or ability to obtain with 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter

Additional Considerations

• valid certified crane operator with appropriate endorsements
• experience in bridge maintenance and construction
• experience fabricating or welding steel components
• skilled in carpentry, building forms, concrete placement and finishing

Safety shoes and other personal protective equipment (PPE) required in performance of job duties.

This position is designated as essential and, as such, all duties associated with this job are required during emergency situations which may include, but are not limited to, inclement weather, disaster response and emergency operations.

Performance of these duties may require work outside of normal business hours including nights, weekends and holidays. VDOT will determine when essential positions are required to report.

Valid Driver's License and ability to travel independently among assigned work locations is required.

VDOT utilizes a market based pay program, which has been approved by DHRM. Therefore, advertised rates of pay may or may not align with the Commonwealth pay bands.
