PARAPROFESSIONAL FOR SPECIAL EDUCATION INTERPRETER

JOB DESCRIPTION

POSITION TITLE: Paraprofessional for Special Education Interpreter

SUPERVISES: N/A

JOB GOAL:

1. To assist the teacher in achieving teaching objectives by interpreting content area instruction for hearing impaired students.

2. To provide a well-organized, seamless functioning class environment in which students can take full advantage of the instructional program and available resource program.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Possesses High School Diploma or equivalent.

2. Successful completion of an Interpretation Program.

3. Demonstrates ability to type at least 50 words per minute.

4. Alabama Certification.

5. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

REPORTS TO: Teacher and/or School Principal

SALARY: To be determined commensurate with local salary matrix, credentials, and experience.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Works with hearing impaired students to reinforce learning of material or skills initially introduced by the teacher.
  2. Assists the teacher in devising special strategies for reinforcing material or skills based on an empathetic understanding of hearing impaired students , their needs, interests and abilities.
  3. Check notebooks, correct papers, and supervise testing and makeup work, as assigned by the teacher.
  4. Assists with such large group activities as drill work, reading aloud and storytelling.
  5. Alerts the regular education teacher to any problem or special information about an individual student.
  6. Maintains the same high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students as is expected of fully licensed teachers.
  7. Participates in inservice training programs as assigned.
  8. Assists with the supervision of hearing impaired students during emergency drills, assemblies, recess, field trips and class activities.
  9. Operates and cares for auditory equipment used in the classroom.
  10. Assists with personal hygiene and toilet routines with hearing impaired students as needed.
  11. Performs other tasks as may be assigned.


REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

    • Ability to work with hearing impaired students.
  • Ability to maintain composure under stressful conditions.
  • Ability to assume responsibility for supervising students, understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to develop effective working relationships with students, staff and the school community.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and the ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. The employee must work with public and other staff, continuously meeting multiple demands from several people.


TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Length of contract and salary will be established by the Board.

EVALUATION:

Performance of the job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on Evaluation of Classified Professional Personnel.
