Why does the job exist?

Under supervision, this position will provide the daily care and maintenance of the Living Desert Zoo and Gardens State Park ensuring Department, Division and Park goals and objectives as well as Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) accreditation standards and United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) requirements and objectives are met. This includes educating Park visitors and interpretation of wildlife and wildlife issues. Under supervision, this position is dedicated towards insuring all buildings, structures, plumbing, HVAC, and equipment are operating and safe at all times.

How does it get done?

Maintaining park facilities and equipment up to Division standards with available financial and staff resources. This requires the ability to recognize items that need attention, prioritize these needs, and allocate the available resources needed, while conserving these resources for the other items that need attention. The incumbent in this position must have knowledge and experience in general construction, facilities and equipment maintenance, time management, staff management, good communication skills and the ability to multi-task. The incumbent in this position requires the ability to communicate with the general public in order to gain public compliance with state park rules and policies for the safety and enjoyment of others, as well as the preservation of the park's natural and cultural resources.

Who are the customers?

Internal and external customers, visitors throughout the state of New Mexico and surrounding states who are campers, hikers, and boaters that come to visit the park for a variety of reasons. Local community businesses in surrounding areas of the park.

Ideal Candidate

Associate Degree in Parks and Recreation Management, Environmental Sciences, Forestry, Criminal Justice, or Wildlife Management and four (4) years of experience in parks and recreation management, natural resources, biology, environmental sciences, forestry, criminal justice, and/or wildlife management. The ideal candidate will have an solid understanding and respect for outdoor recreation and education. The candidate should have a strong background in facilities and grounds maintenance to include carpentry, plumbing, landscaping, masonry, etc. Customer service experience and public contact preferred.

Minimum Qualification

High School Diploma or Equivalent and six (6) months of experience in parks, monuments, museums, interpretive/educational ranger, field archaeologist and/or ruins preservationist at a historic site. Substitutions Apply. See Substitution Table below.

Employment Requirements

- Valid New Mexico Driver's License
- Defensive driving certification within six month from the date of hire

Working Conditions

The position is labor intensive to include: digging, bending, pushing, pulling, and lifting, as well as standingfor long periods of time. The position requires the use of various hand and power tools, as well as operatingvehicles and heavy equipment. One may be required to work in adverse weather conditions, extreme coldand heat for extended periods of time. Shift work may be required on holidays or during park events.Emergency maintenance situations may also arise requiring extended hours of work. Sitting at a desk or computer workstation is also required. Must be willing to accept assignment/transfer to another geographic location. Extensive travel in region wide area. Weekend/holiday work required.
