Statement of Job:

The School of Nursing (SON) at the University of Southern Maine invites applications for anticipated Part-Time Faculty openings for the Summer 2024 semester, which begins on January 16, 2024. These positions involve teaching clinical nursing to pre-licensure nursing students in the baccalaureate nursing program. Course meeting dates, times, and lengths may vary depending on the particular lab or clinical. Broadly, the fall semester is from September 3 rd through December 13th. There will also be required training/orientation meeting(s) before the start of the semester as relevant to the course(s) the individual is hired to teach. The majority of courses are on the Portland Campus, however, we will have sections of several labs and lectures at our Lewiston Campus.

Faculty responsibilities include orienting, teaching, supervising, grading, and evaluating pre-licensure nursing students. Clinical sections will have up to 8 students per clinical depending on location, lab/simulation sections may have 12-16 students per lab, and lectures typically have 30-35 students per section.

We have a robust mentorship program for part-time faculty. Each course has a Course Lead Faculty who serves as the content area expert for the course, mentors other faculty teaching the course, set up the syllabus, and structure the course content to ensure consistency between sections.

These teaching opportunities could involve any of the following lab, lecture, or clinical courses, depending on our needs, and we will work with those hired to find the best teaching match(es) to their skills, experience, interest, and availability.

NUR 301 - Health Assessment Lab - 1 credit. course meetings are 2 hours per week for 14 weeks at the Portland campus.

NUR 307 - Nursing Fundamentals Lab - 2 credits. Course meetings are for 4 hours per week for 14 weeks at the Portland campus.

NUR 313 - Intermediate Nursing Skills/Simulation Lab Med/Surg - 1 credit. Course meetings are 4 hours a week for the second 7 weeks of the semester at the Portland campus. Team-taught with two faculty members.

NUR 325 - Junior Medical/Surgical Clinical - 4 credits. Typically one day per week for 14 weeks, possible clinical locations may include MMC, SMHC, CMMC, Mid Coast, Mercy, Maine General, or St. Mary's.

NUR 330 - Mental Health Nursing Lecture - 3 credits. Fall semester at either the Portland or Lewiston campus.

NUR 331 - Mental Health Nursing Clinical - 2 credits. Typically one day per week for 7 weeks (some first half of the semester, some second half of the semester), possible clinical locations may include Spring Harbor, SMHC, St. Mary's, or Maine General.

NUR 413 - Advanced Nursing Skills/Simulation Lab acute care - 1 credit. Course meetings are 4 hours a week for the first 7 weeks of the semester at the Portland campus. Team-taught with two faculty members on the Portland Campus.

NUR 420 - Pediatric & Maternity Skills/Simulation Lab - 2 credits. Course meetings are 4 hours a week for 14 weeks at the Portland campus. This lab includes both hands-on learning and simulation. We are seeking instructors for either the maternity or the pediatric areas of this lab. Applicants do not need to be skilled in both areas. At the Portland campus.

NUR 422 - Reproductive Health Nursing Clinical - 2 credits. Typically one day per week for 7 weeks (some first half of the semester, some second half of the semester), possible clinical locations may include MMC, SMHC, CHMCH, Mid Coast, Mercy, or Maine General. Fall semester.

NUR 427 - Pediatric Nursing Lecture - 3 credits. Meeting once per week for 14 weeks. Sections are available on both the Portland and Lewiston campuses.

NUR 425 - Senior Acute Care Medical/Surgical Clinical - 2 credits. Typically one day per week for the first 7 weeks of the semester, possible clinical locations may include MMC, SMHC, CMMC, Mid Coast, Mercy, or St. Mary's.

NUR 428 - Child Health Nursing Clinical - 2 credits. Typically one day per week for 7 weeks (some first half of the semester, some second half of the semester), typically at MMC but other clinical sites are possible.

Part-time faculty members are paid on a credit hour basis based on prior college teaching experience. Qualifications:

  • BSN or BS in Nursing from an accredited program
  • Current active Maine RN license or relevant nursing compact license
  • Able to meet employment criteria including background check, immunizations, BLS/CPR certification, and current TB for clinical teaching.
  • Expertise in entry-level nursing skills, and recent practice in clinical nursing.
