Job Summary

IU Dining and Hospitality is seeking a part-time translator/interpreter to assist with interpreting and translating documents, interview questions, training resources, etc. This role is essential for ensuring clear communication and understanding between non-English speaking employees and the management team.

Department-Specific Responsibilities
  • Translates and interprets interview questions and responses between candidates and interviewers to ensure accurate understanding and communication.
  • Assists new hires by translating onboarding materials, explaining procedures, and ensuring they understand university policies, job responsibilities, and safety protocols.
  • Translates training materials and provides real-time interpretation during training sessions to help non-English speaking employees comprehend instructions and participate actively.
  • Supports interactions and communications between non-English speaking staff and management, including translating announcements, memos, and other workplace communications.
  • Helps bridge cultural differences and facilitates mutual understanding between employees and management to promote a positive and inclusive work environment.
  • Assists in translating written documents such as training manuals, employee handbooks, and other relevant materials as needed.
Qualifications

EDUCATION

Required
  • High school diploma or equivalent (such as HSED or GED).
Preferred
  • Bachelor's degree (foreign language, business, and/or communications) or significant immersion experience in non-native language.
SKILLS

Required
  • Fluency in English and at least one other language commonly spoken by the workforce (e.g., Albanian, Hindi, French, Arabic, Spanish, Somali, Cantonese, Ukrainian etc.).
  • Must be able to read, speak clearly, and write effectively in all of the languages in which they are working.
  • Must be able to focus while others are speaking or moving around them.
  • Must be able to put clients and others at ease. Interpreters may work on teams and must get along with colleagues to ensure success.
  • Strong commitment to guest service.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to convey information clearly and accurately.
  • Highly thorough and dependable.
Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. This role also will occasionally work indoors around both hot and cold temperatures and loud noises. This role occasionally involves proximity to meat and plant-based food products as well as a variety of ingredients that may include some or all of the top 9 allergens. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

Additional Information

The position will not be involved in translating or interpreting for legal matters but will focus on facilitating effective communication during hiring processes, staff training sessions, and daily operations.

Work Hours

Up to 29 hours per week.

Hours of work will vary depending on the need of the department to complete assigned translations.
