Job Requisition: Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) Registered Nurse

Degree/Education:
  • Minimum: Diploma in Nursing from a program approved by the state accrediting agency at the time of completion.
  • Preferred: Associate Degree (ADN) or Baccalaureate Degree (BSN) from Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) accredited program.
  • Submission of college transcript and diploma required.

Certifications:
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through American Heart Association (AHA).
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification, renewed biennially.
  • Attendance for MAMC BLS and PALS recertification at discretion of department COR, non-billable status.

Experience:
  • Minimum of one (1) year experience in Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) within the last three years.

Licensure:
  • Current, valid, active, and unrestricted Registered Nurse license in any U.S. jurisdiction (state, District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, US Virgin Islands).
  • Licensure must remain unencumbered throughout contract employment.
  • Documentation of nursing license verification required.

Specialty Requirements:
  • Contract nurses operate under technical supervision of Chief of Department or Government representative.
  • Non-military or Government civilian personnel for contract services.
  • Rights reserved to refuse contract staff based on certification, credentials, licensure, or background checks.

Job Responsibilities:
  • Perform clinical duties as required in PICU, including assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of age-specific nursing care.
  • Provide intensive care for pediatric patients with complex medical and surgical conditions.
  • Document clinical activities, patient progress, and medical directives according to standard procedures.
  • Assist physicians during treatments and procedures; administer medications and treatments; facilitate admissions, discharges, and patient rehabilitation.

Additional Responsibilities:
  • Act as patient advocate, assess patient/family education needs, and document educational plans.
  • Manage hemodynamic monitoring, titration of medications, and procedures with infection risks (e.g., catheters, lines, tubes).
  • Communicate patient status to charge nurse and physicians; verify transcription of orders; develop and manage nursing care plans.
  • Administer medications within scope; research medications as necessary (excluding cancer chemotherapy drugs without appropriate training).
  • Respond to emergencies, operate emergency equipment (e.g., defibrillator, EKG), potentially serve on Rapid Response or emergency code teams.

Other Duties:
  • Direct patient care procedures (e.g., mobility, hygiene, feeding).
  • Supervise licensed practical nurses and unlicensed personnel; collaborate on patient care plans.
  • Adhere to infection control protocols; manage quality assurance and risk management issues.
  • Participate in discharge planning, patient care conferences, and staff meetings.
  • Maintain professional demeanor; manage interpersonal relationships effectively in stressful situations.

Work Schedule:
  • Normal duty hours: 0700-1930 or 1900-0730, Monday through Sunday, including weekends and holidays.
  • Overtime as required, compensated per contract guidelines.
